Does anyone know the thread pitch and diameter of the threaded portion of the axle spindle? Going to attempt to machine a spindle grease tool for a school project. Thanks!

Do you mean the outboard end of the driveshaft, under the grease cap, that you use to pull the driveshaft out when installing the snap ring? It's M8 x 1.25; that's the "standard" M8 thread.

This is correct.

No, I mean the external thread that the lock nut threads on to. Sorry, should have clarified which threaded portion I meant.

So you mean the hub flange that holds the bearings in?

M42 x 1.5

I measured a locknut, because I don't have an open axle at the moment. I would not advise spending money based on my measurement; it's provided for your planning needs only. The spindle thread should be measured if you're planning to cut an internal thread to match it. Otherwise, I would suggest you obtain a locknut, or two, and incorporate them into your tool. They are already threaded, are known to fit, and would be less error prone than cutting that size internal thread on a lathe would be.

Unless, of course, if that's the point of your project. If it is, go for it. That's the kind a skill that separates a machinist from a machine operator.

If you ask me what the measurement across flats is, I'm going to bill you.

I've seen tools with the locknut welded to a length of 1.5" pipe that's capped and has a zerk tapped, but I figure I'll challenge myself with cutting the internal threads out of one solid piece. Worst that'll happen is it won't work and I'll crawl back to the safety of the latter. Thanks for looking into that for me, I'll definitely double check on my spindle thread before the rubber hits the road, I just didn't have time to dig into the axle mid-week and was curious if someone had the knowledge already. I'll report back with good or bad news. Cheers.

Slee makes a grease tool similar to what you're describing. I have one and can give you measurements if you want something for reference.

That's exactly what I'm going for! Didn't want to name drop the specific tool as I know Christo frequents the forum, but if you can confirm the dimensions that @Malleus figured, then I'll be on my way.
