Axle replace / CV Boot question (5 Viewers)

Took my car to dealership for SRS light… they said its driver side seatbelt but they can’t fix it.

They did do an overall inspection and said I need new front axles bc the CV boot had ripped and there are signs of dirt inside.

$2k seems like a ton of money here. Can I just clean the axle and replace the CV boot? Other options?

it really depends on what else they will do when changing the axles
are they changing the inner seals? hub flanges? dust cap? using Toyota axles not aftermarket? performing a wheel bearing service? are they doing both sides? checking brakes?

Yes, you can reboot them. I went with NAPA New axles and have had no issues. I think i spent $500 including axle and labor from my mechanic. Just the passenger side was the problem. Price included greasing the bearings.

There is no bearing in the CV axles - the service advisor doesn’t know what he’s talking about. You can reboot, but it may not be the best idea depending on age and spline wear. New Toyota CV axles retail about $500 at the dealer, but you can get them under $350 if you search. If you replace the axle do the hub flange as well.

Or you can reboot for about $80. It’s a half day job if you haven’t done it before.

I would replace axles and flanges.
Oe only, don’t buy aftermarket

Yep. Toyota only. If the outer splines are worn then order them during the next SE Toyota dealer sale, if not then reboot. You will want to have (at least) differential seals, snap rings, dust caps, hub grease etc if you reboot in addition to the reboot kit, and add hub flanges and gaskets, flange studs, cone washers, split washers, nuts if you go with new axles.

Put in your VIN on partsouq and look at the parts diagram.
