I used the BFP method on this page to split my birfs, now I need to put them back together but I am missing something.

http://www.birfield.com/~morgan//tech/axle/part3.html

in this picture I see the top c clip and have a new one in cdan's kit but what is the lower clip\ring? The picture is fuzzy and I cant make it out. I assume it broke into pieces when I split the birk\axle?

I believe the lower one is to make sure the axle doesn't slide too far into the birf-star. I don't recall my '97 having a lower one but it probably did, actually just looked at my pics and unless I took it off (no reason to) my '97 did not have that lower ring. I don't remember taking it off and there would not have been a reason to. But my pics show the axle has the same groove for it...odd...now makes me wonder if I somehow lost it in my work...

so you think its 2 of the same c clips? by the picture I thought maybe it was some thing else. In Cdan's kit I also got 2 smaller (too small for the axle) soft metal compression type washers that I have not come across yet during the tear down?

I believe my kit from C-dan had new snaprings for both the inner and outer(upper and lower in your pic). The two compression washers are the drain and fill plugs on the diff(don't worry, you're not the first to be stumped by Cdan's thouroughness ;) )

Ary is right, Dans kit came with the skinny inner clips that hold the axel in the birf as well as the larger clips that go on just before the dust cap/rotors

Actually then there would be 3 sets of clips, which I believe I recieved. I'm pretty sure there was a new snap-ring for every snap-ring I took off. There's the inner and outer snap rings on the inner shaft, one gets compressed and slides through the star to the inaccesible portion of the diff, the other keeps the inner from sliding too far into the birf. The third set of snap rings goes on the ends of the birfs after the drive flange goes on, and is directly beneath the dust cap.

You might want to check w/ Dan, I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure they were all there.

Edit: Now that I think about it some more, maybe those inner most snap rings(lower in your picture) weren't in the kit. They don't need to be removed for any part of the service, so maybe I didn't get new ones. Now I'm confused. Help! :D

I'll see if I can confuse you some more. I know for a fact that a '97 only uses one of the clips shown in the picture (the outer one as you are referring to it) and I think that is true with all 80 series. I believe that picture is from a 40 series, which uses the extra clip. HTH
