Okay, so my new '78 FJ has a 20 gallon aux tank. It arrived empty so I filed the stock tank. IF I filled both tanks, do you have to switch the tanks when one runs dry? Other than putting a stick down the aux tank neck, can you find out what if any gas is in that tank?

Here is a real FJ 40 Newbie question. My 40 is a hard top with barn doors and sparee tire carrier. Can I take the roof and doors off, fold down the windshield and party? Where do you reattach the shoulder harness anchors?

Congrats on the new rig! :flipoff2:

Don't know too much about aux gas tank, but you can certainly get another fuel gauge to hook up to the aux gas tank. Or you can wire your existing gauge to both gas tanks and run a switch to change between showing the fuel in the main or aux tanks. Check out wantatlc's thread on doing just that. Yes, you can take the roof off. Yes, you can take the doors off. Yes, you can fold down the windshield. Yes, you are then ready to party. You might be able to attach the shoulder harnesses to the roll bar. Some 40s came like that, and I think there's a bracket you can get. Also, with the barn doors, you'll need to find a tailgate or just a flat panel to fill the space left when you remove those rear doors if you don't want stuff falling out the back.

You would need to drop the aux tank and see if it has been modified to fit a factory sending unit. You will want to use the same part number sending unit that is in you main tank. On my 22 gal aux tank I had to have the shaft that the float is attached to extended as the aux tank is deeper. I installed a Pollak 6 port fuel switching valve that not only switches the tanks but the senders also. It is different from a solenoid valve in that after it switches tanks it turns off the power to the valve. A solenoid valve will need to be continuously energized to use the aux tank. A useless draw on ones battery. If you’re serious about controlling both tanks and senders, then the Pollak 3 (no return) or 6 (with return) fuel tank switching valve is the only way to go. You will also need to buy their toggle switch, as a standard switch will not work because of the way the valve uses 12v to switch.
