Greetings:

I have read over all of the Dual Battery posts and am presently planning out my system.

It had been suggested to fuse the aux batter close to the battery itself to protect against fireworks in the event the positive cable connecting it gets severed in and accident and grounds out as this is a fairly long run.

Any suggestions on what type of fuse and fuse holder along with mounting ideas and amperage?

Thanks,

Steve

Stop by your local auto supply and have a look at an in-line Maxi Fuse holder. You can install one of these between the battery and your auxiliary fuse box, and use whatever size fuse (30A, 40A, 50A etc) that is appropriate for the circuits/load that connect to the fuse block.

I will be using #2 gauge wire. Will Maxi Fuse accomodate such a thick cable?

Thanks,

Steve

No. Not sure why you would need that large a cable for an auxilary, but you know your set up and what you are trying to accomplish and I do not. It's tough to make recommendations when you don't have the big picture ;)

I believe you can use the in-line Maxi up to perhaps #6 wire... beyond that, you will need another solution.

Steve,

I got a lot of ideas from CruiserDrew's dual battery install and used one of these from Hellroaring Technologies. The fuse holder and fuses are available other places. I bought spare fuses from NAPA but I don't think they have this particular fuse holder. CruiserDrew installed this fuse on the ground side of the backup battery. I installed this fuse on the +12v side because I have a high amp circuit going to the rear of the vehicle.

"For high amp circuits such as the backup battery setup, we have available a fuse (150 amp) and fuse holder set. Order part number FS-150A."

If you have a West Marine in your town this is where I got most of my parts...or try a car audio store...they carry higher amp fuses/holders too.

Since it isn't an application where you are likely to replace it often I would suggest a fusible link. Just get one with the correct current rating and splice it in line then heat shrink the whole thing. For smaller guage wire they sell them as fusible link wire with a ring terminal on one side and a place to butt splice on the other, but I couldn't find any in #2 on-line.

No.

Other than connecting the main cables wrong on the back up battery what is the fuse going to do?

Maybe keep the power cable tying the two batteries together from causing a fire due to minor grill bending accident. Look at how the cable to starter is routed. It is well away from exterior sheet metal. Look at how folks route the cable between the two batteries - stretched across the front of the engine compartment, pretty much in harms way.
