Noticing strange behavior on downhills when braking, I read on a Lexus site that the newer Toyota's have automatic downshifting which does not upshift until you accelerate. Anyone know about this? I will start watching the tach for clues.

from what I understand it will downshift on braking and incline, you can force more aggressive engine braking (according to the manual) by downshifting manually - however it is not clear whether or not this changes the automatic engine braking or if it's just a function of forcefully selecting a lower gear...
If it behaves anything like other autos I've owned that were in trucks if you either lightly tap the brakes or brake going downhill the tranny should downshift with you to aid in the braking.

My '03 does this, but only after you hit the brakes while going downhill. On a mountain decent, say your going 50mph in 5th and brake until 35mph. The tranny will shift down to hold the speed at about 35mph and hold it in that gear until you brake or accelerate, all this without having to shift the shifter manually into 4th or 3rd. The engine doesn't rev up to a zillion rpm, either. I like the feature, makes the 100 decend exactly as if it had a 5speed manual tranny. The biggest reason why I don't like automatics is the trannies will make the car go faster and faster on a mountain descent, and there usually aren't enough gears to down shift into (often D,2, and L). Not so on the 5 speed 100.
