Automatic, clunking into 4th gear (1 Viewer)

Hi guys,

I have had my bj74 (automatic) for a few months now. It has always engaged into 4th gear with quite a "clunk". Is this common for this model? There is a troubleshooting section in the FSM for "harsh engagment of gears", but I want to know other owners experience before I begin investigating.

There are two things to look for, one is the shift into 4th and the other is the lock up of the torque converter for 4th gear. They are not the same thing...

A clunk may or may not be related to the transmission itself. Best to have someone who knows what to look for take it for a test drive.
