I know these guys are a site sponsor and I'm considering purchasing from these guys but I'm concerned............
I just want to make sure the road mannners are proper. I do alot of road trip going surfing but I sure would like a couple lockers in my 76 3B 40 series. I've just heard bad news overall from what we around here have always called 'lunch box' lockers.
Does anybody have any experience with the Aussie locker?
I'm looking for virtual undetectable road mannered locker. I just wanted to do a little informal research before I made a purchase. These units sure would be cheaper and easier to get than JDM housings with cable lockers and no plumbing and compressor like the air lockers.

What's the word from the trails regarding the 'Aussie locker'

no experience myself, but my friend is waiting to get his front aussi any day now.

try searching the other forums. there is a LOT of talk about these lockers. I mean I think they killed it many times over.

just use the search function in the upper tool bar. I know you will get hits.

I have an Aussie in the rear( and an ARB in the front). In my opinion the Aussie is great off road but not very desirable for normal driving. You defiantly know it’s there. For a daily driver, I would go for a selectable locker in the rear.

The Aussie might be OK in the front if you have manual locking hubs.

The aussie/lockrite do ok for normal driving. You might get tired of it after a while on a daily driver and it's not going to be a "virtual undetectable road mannered locker." It will do nicely though and is a good cost effective locker. To keep it from locking and unlocking make sure you put in new thrust washers. It will make the aussie drive much better. Off road they work very well. Good luck.. you can always sell them fairly quickly if you don't like em...

I put an aussie in the back of my 45 this past summer. It took me all of 3 hours. I do have a full floater though. It is not my daily driver but the several times I have been in paved parking lots I have barely noticed the rachet sound in the rear end. A friend who installed one a year ago does get the occassional bang from the rear end. Off road it is awesome. On off camber mud it dogwalks and I think it has pointed out the wear in my R&P because I have a noticable clunk in the rear end now. I have yet to go through a winter on slippery pavement. I'm sure it will drive the same as my old mopar with posi-trac in the snow. I think it is VERY good value and a VERY good upgrade.

I thought that this

--> I'm looking for virtual undetectable road mannered locker.

It's imposible with an automatic locker ( Aussie ) if you want an undetectable " on road " locker, it's my advice, go with selectable locker.

Hey quick question about aussie lockers. Do you remove the spider gear washers?

yes, remove spiders/washers and side gears, you keep or should get new if not within spec side washers(thrust)

Yes that's what I figured. thanks

My opinion is that the Aussie locker is superior in design to the other lunchbox lockers. It is still an auto locker and has, to a certain degree, all the inconveniences of one. The bad road mannors are more noticable in a heavy rig like a Cruiser than a minitruck. The mini guys really seem to like them and have tested them hard. Its very important to get the thrust washer thickness correct in order to have the smoothest possible operation. This will reduce the incidences of clunk on accelleration. I think they are really good value for the money and its hardly worth the hassle of welding a rear end (my preference).

Well I posted the same question over in the '60 forum about three weeks ago. I got my Aussie today and hope to have it installed by the weekend (rear axle only). I'll let you know what my thoughts are on the install as well as the road manners.

How about the Detroit Locker range. I used to hear a lot of good things about them but they seemed to have faded out lately.
I considered them because we dont get he Aussie locker in Aussie land :D

I had very bad luck with Detroit's EZ Locker. Had a metalurgist friend check it on a Rockwell hardness machine and it was softer than the Lock Rite. That being said, It would have done much better if I had the correct thrust washers in there. The Detroit Lockers that include the whole carrier are well respected but cost close to an ARB and replaces a vertially indestructable carrier. Doesn't Macnamerra manufacture something in your end of the planet?

I know on High performance and drag racing bulletin boards, everyone still swears by the Detroit Locker as the best. They do nothing but complain about Lockrites and Powertrax's as breaking. But on 4WD buletin boards most seem happy with their Lockrites and Aussi Lockers.
I think I will go with a Lockright or Aussie Locker for my Land Cruiser because of cost and good feedback from Land Cruiser owners.
I've dished out years of abuse and got trouble free service with my Detroit Lockers on my race cars.
Haven't heard much about Detroits EZ locker though.

i have run lock rites for years and other than the banging, and torque steer i have had no problems...
the auzzi locker is supposed ot have better handling characterisitcs but i am not sure...
i doubt this helps your decision making.
sorry...

I forgot about Jack. I went and had a look at his site and will keep that in mind.
Thanks

I'll run that ez locker in my front end Tapage...

Yeah.. I'm easy on birfs anyway. I have at least 3 spares and axles and i've never (knock on wood) broken one. I don't have any issues pulling cable and or taking a strap which I'm sure has helped. I'd rather not break things when wheeling :)

I don't really want to tear down my front end (recently rebuilt) to put it in and try one out either...
