Aussie locker problems

i just had an Aussie locker installed in the rear of my 60. I've had it on the road for two days of light town driving. backing into my drive way today and Bang! snapped the Pinon shaft. had to use 4 wheel to get it on the flat bed for tow back to shop. Glad it happened in the drive way but don't understand how it could fail so quickly. Is this normal or common for the aussie lockers. Are they prone to breaking things when making tight turns on pavement?? I'm probably gunna pull it for a locker better suited for street and off road use. Is there a stronger pin to be used in the locker?? and will I then just snap an axel in the same situation?? i'm not impressed. Please advise

Yeah, what snapped? I've had no issues with mine. Did the shop use the correct thickness thrust washers?
 
my bad, The pinion shaft snapped. nice outward vertical dent on the inspection cover.
 
Sounds like a big installation error. I have had no problems with mine.
 
hmmmmm I wonder if he had the bolt in?
That's just where I'd look, too. Things happen to even the best of us, and your installer could have overlooked that important detail. That shaft would walk right out if it was loose and had no crossbolt installed.
The way I remember it, the info that came with my Aussie purchased nearly 5 yrs ago (for my Dodge D-44 front) noted that a new hardened pinion shaft would be a great idea, or at least noting proper tolerances with the old one.
 
I've got probably 100,000 kms on my Aussie locker in everything from ice and snow in Canada to mud and nasty roads in Central America. I'm with the others, your installer screwed up.
 
I'm running Aussie lockers front and rear in my 62 with 35" MTR's with NO PROBLEMS at all. I've blown 3 stock birfs in the front but that's running Blues and Blacks :doh: I've had them for 2-3 years now

Only other thing would be pinion was already crack/weak :hhmm:
 
So at low speed parking lot turn is it normal for the truck to buck forward as you turn or is that an indication of a poor install?? it was the original pinion shaft is there one specific to the aussie thats to be used in place?? I've heard so many good things bout the aussie locker here on mud so i'm trying to nail down whats gone wrong.
 
Bucking and lurching does happen. You'll even get a good bang every now and again. I usually slide it in neutral or clutch in around tight turns on blacktop/concrete surfaces. No special pinion upgrade needed.
 
what might he have done wrong during the install to cause this to happen? incorrect spacing? any ideas?
 
In the back

In the back of the install guide is a set of tests to conduct after install to make sure the install was within the 2 measured tolerences. If he didn't do that, or if he didn't install the carrier pin retaining bolt. Then he messed up. Open it up in front of him and see what happened. It may be something obvious. Its hard to install too "tight" due to the clearance that the c-clips need, but it easy to build too loose...I don't know how that equates to seizing up and snapping a pinion...
 
You do have to go at a constant speed around tight turns for it not to buck. Having the same pressure in the tires also keeps it from pulling. These are pretty easy things to get used to and it won't buck on you. I also say it must be installation error. Have you contacted Aussie? There are some good write-ups on 'MUD about installing the Aussie (or Lockrite they are basically the same.) You can do it yourself. I don't know much mechanically and I got it put together. If you aren't familiar with the installation, then you might want to review the write-ups on 'MUD before you go talk to your mechanic.
 
I really think the asshat left out the bolt for the pin:frown:

X 2, bolt holding the pinion shaft in is probably missing or not in tight enough and backed out on it's own.
