All my grand-paw's farm equipment with split rims have to run tubes. Also those wheels are referred to as "Widow Makers" so beware of the ring

split rims

They make great anchors for any boat ,and if you like you can add them to any dumb bell set to increase weight

if your not familiar with split rims have a pro do them .friend of mine got his whole face ripped off by 1 and died . get something safer, when your on the road very few people will want to touch those i agree with all the others on here .old jeep wagoneer had 6 bolt pattern and 16" non split rims not to mention other sources but its your truck good luck

These are not the same style as domestic split rims. They are not as dangerous as you think. Have you seen a Toyota split rim:idea:

seems like there more trouble than the seem
 They are actually pretty easy to use. Search split rim. You'll see that they are easy to change with a few simple tools.

With a Toyota split rim? I'm sorry for your friend. Again, Try looking through old posts here to find out that they are not as dangerous as you think and very easy to change with simple tools. Again do you have experience with a Toyota split rim? Are they heavier, yes. They can still be run safely and easily.

This thread is full ridiculous info.

I've had a 2 tire places refuse to work on them due to the possibility of them coming apart on the balancing machine. Maybe they were just being lazy....

That is because like the others above they think they are like domestic split wheels. They are not. They are not going to come flying apart. You won't even be able to air the tire up if the ring is not seated correctly. Really, they are easy to work on. I guess you fear what you don't know.

I love my split rims and have never had a prblem with them. As long as you know how to safely air them up you will be fine. I built a cage for mine though. Just like we had in the military for the Duece.

if their so damn good why doesnt any one use them i had a set of those years ago and they were a pain .i have a tire machine so those rims are basicly of no use to me and the guy i gave em to threw them away . i also have 4 military trucks with split rims up to 1100 20 tyres and change them when needed.im still alive because i am afraid of them a split rim is a split rim doesnt matter who makes it even semis are going to regular rims and the school bus i just cut up had regular rims also a photo would help your cause good luck

it will work if you like those. i have a set of 900.16 military tires on my 65 mudd truck and they are 36" tall and use tubes .but they are heavy duty try a truck tire store or maybey a surplus place good luck

VIVA SPLIT RIMS! People get them confused with widomakers which are entirely a different wheel.

That being said you need to respect them when you are airing up. You can wrap a heavy chain around the wheel and tire when airing up for a safety precaution.

When I change a split rim. I do the following when putting it back together.

a. make sure the split in the ring and the hole on the wheel are opposite eachother.

b. clean the groove in the wheel with a screw driver and feel for any defects. I also clean the ring too.

c. wrap a chain around the tire and wheel to absorb any energy if the ring was to fail.

d. stick about 5 pounds of pressure and stop. Then make sure the ring and tire are seating correctly. Continue airing up.

Here is our 45 with splittys..

Hey Bull,
Who do you get to balance your split rims? I have asked several tire shops if they will balance the wheels/tires if I mount them prior to bringing them into the shop. The tire shops that I have talked to won't even do that. I understand that most tire shops won't mess with them because of insurance purposes. Have you found this to be the case?

You may have to go to a rural/farm town. You could also try a truck stop, they deal in split rims daily. I have never had an issue with when we had them balanced. I have found inner city tire places pretty inept.

i just put in 235/85/16s in my BJ70 split rims with tubes, we live in bangladesh so split rims are still common here amongst truckers and opening/fitting seems easy to these chaps who do about a dozen wheels a day! its quite a tough looking wheel and is OEM so i didnt change it to another set of Prado steelies i have bought. i even have nissan patrol oem chrome wheels but i want to keep the military look!

Gday,
Toyota splitties as they are commonly called cant be to dangerous they are still standard on new toyotas that come out here. Have had them on toyotas for as long as i can remember, you should be cautious inflating them in ensuring that the ring is set correctly once the ring is seated slide them under ur truck and pump away. Awesome to repair once u know what u are doing and I have not come accross a tyre shop in Oz yet that wont balance them.
