Audi/VW owners chime in

I would bet that if a mud member owns a 40-60 Series LC and a 2015 vehicle today, and keeps both for 15 more years, only the LC will still be running in 2030.

Being from a third world, I understand what you are saying

HOWEVER, one thing I agree with OP is car length is important. Where my TSX Wagon resides (car hauler), I can't have anything longer than 190 inches. So size matters.
Well now, see that's not the American way. The right thing to do is realize the problem isn't the longness of the car, but the shortness of the garage. A new house is in order!!!

Yeah we live our life the non American way for sure.

My nurses at the hospital drive cars worth 3x as much as mine, and live in houses 2-3x as much as I do. One nurse few years ago asked me if I had a "vice." As in why is my house small and I drive cars, in her words unfitting a physician. I guess she thought I was wasting money on whores and coke.

LMAO!

Yes, I'm being picky. But $20k is not chump change to me and the car is required for my work. When the zombies come, I will leave the car behind and head to the hills in my cruiser.

I get it. I had a 52" TV I went to mount over the fireplace a while ago. I found out the hard way it wasn't VESA mount compliant after I had already purchased the mount. Instead of buying a new $200 mount, I just bought a new, $1800, 72" VESA compliant TV. Problem solved, American-style...

^^
I need to get with you guys. We dont' have a tv. my kids complain about not having TV
Stop blowing your money on coke and hookers, man, and get your kids a freakin' TV!

After the 20V turbo cars? I'll still call on a '91 200 avant if I see one for sale, just can't help myself. Sold my '90 with 250k on it, still fast and comfy.

I still want an Audi to drive, but not to own.

Good point, the early Audi cars were a different animal entirely and kind of fun in a simple way. I got to co-drive a Coupe Quattro for a Rally America event that was awesome, but we had a bad roll going pretty fast and that was the end of that. I also worked on multiple URS-6 cars back in the day and while I liked the power those cars always had crazy electrical issues. I would have a hard time passing up another Coupe Quattro in good condition if one popped up for sale.

With regards to BMW it is not the same machine it used to be, similar to Audi/VW. I currently own an 2002 325XI wagon that now has about 210k on the clock. It's been a great vehicle but also has had plenty of repairs over the years. Having said that it has only required one tow truck ride in all of the years I have owned it, not too bad I guess. If you want a sporty and fun to drive vehicle BMW is a good choice, but it can get expensive depending on what model/year you are looking at. I am a big fan of the E46 chassis cars myself but they are getting old. The newer BMW engines use a system called Valvetronic for their variable valve timing and to idle the car, I have seen several now that have worn down the lobes and levers for the system causing misfires and fault codes.

Saab 9-3 Aero 2008+ 275hp, 300tq, awd optional and they are all dirt cheap. I know they're clunkers, but my buddy does own the local Saab shop

It's pretty important to have a good shop that can work on whatever you end up buying (if you can't do it yourself). Maybe a Saab wouldn't be all that bad in your case if you like what the car offers. I would talk to your buddy first though so he can steer you in the right direction. I recently put a clutch in an old C900 Turbo, the engine faces the wrong direction!

Aldi has a 45" BAUHN for $300 right now, and a wall mount and speaker system.

Don't get a Saab unless you have another car. My experience with three Sabbs bought new is that the problems are catastrophic.

Engines, timing chain and transmissions were the usual culprits. Medium mileage too, like 70K.

They are beginning to look old now. We had a major Saab dealer in the area and I see them every day.

9-5 convertible still looks pretty good though.

I'm now leaning strongly towards the IS350. Pretty much all the "newer cars wont last" stuff I personally feel doesn't apply to that car. The motor has been in use in various vehicles for a good long time, transmission less simple, but still has a good track record. I've owned a handful of lexuses and higher-end toyotas with electronic gadgets, and they all seem to keep working. I'm going a little over budget and I am somewhat compromising the work purpose of the vehicle by getting something with a tiny back seat. I'll just have to scrunch all the way up and have them sit behind me.

I have done that very same clutch job. Gotta hand it to old school Saab for thinking outside the box. Nice to change a clutch without pulling the engine or transmission :)

Honestly, the Saab was kind of a joke. I've been around them since I was a teenager and I have seen all the awesome and the terrible that comes along with that. My friend, the Saab mechanic, sincerely steered me away from any of the newer models and it's not because he doesn't want me hanging around the shop (he used to let me use his lift/tools/expertise on the weekends).

Having gone rubber-side up in the past, I have absolutely zero interest in owning any convertible. Except maybe a spec miata racer with a roll cage and a hard top :o

I have a B5 A4 Avant Quattro. Fun car to drive...nightmare to service. Replacing the thermostat required doing the Timing Belt! Not the best engineering decision there. Lexus likely gets my next commuter-car dollars.

That is just easy access! I finished up a 2.7T reseal/tbelt just this morning. I guess I have been doing them for so long that it's just routine now. May as well pull the cams and reseal everything while you are there, maybe replace the tensioners if they are pitted.

Here is the backside of a an S4 V8, same story on the 3.2 V6 engines. Now this is a pita:

Tell me how that will age gracefully! Do you think it will still be running in 10-15 years?

with a bit more effort they could have made it really complicated

:eek::eek::eek:

And I thought Toyota putting the starter in the center of their V8 truck engines was complicated...

A few years back I had a Saabaru 9-2x Aero that I completely loved to drive, even though it felt pretty cheap materials-wise.

Interesting how few have noticed what you said there ;)

See them every once in a while.... I've heard some of the Subaru guys are a little jealous of the cleaner license plate look the Saab's got....

The true american way would be to buy an electronically retractable screen mounted into the ceiling, auto-darkening/shaded windows, and a projector in the back..... size of the screen only being limited by the depth of the room ;)
