ATF in transfer case

We're talking about Toyota xfer cases, not BW or NP domestic lines.

Doesn't matter, ATF in transfers is relatively common, so a common mistake. As mentioned trans and transfer can not leak between boxes, so ether someone made a mistake in fill fluid or used a red dyed fluid. Ether way, change it out and the "problem" is solved.

I ran ATF in my 1990 toy pickup (chain driven t case) for 30,000 miles with no issues my friend did the same with his third gen 4 runner t case...chain drives arent picky like gear drives because there innards are similar to an auto trans( has planetary gear set) gear drives need gear oil due to the gears needing a thick high pressure lubricant

If the tranny output seal failed (or TC seal) the fluids would not mix. The TC and tranny are separated by a 'gap' that is open to atmosphere by several holes in the casting. The fluid would drain onto the ground if either seal failed.

My Trans fluid level is too high, and there is a whining from the pump (probably being overworked). A mechanic in the area suggested that ATF leaked from TC into Tranny. However, fluid color looks fine. Are you saying that this is not possible?
Trans hasn't been touched in about a year, just started experiencing this whine over the weekend.
As a side note, its quite possible my last mechanic put ATF in TC - he does weird stuff like that sometimes. I don't mind, him being a Toyota/Lexus master mechanic knows more than me.

Thanks.

It is impossible to leak transfer case fluid into transmission and vise versa. It will leak on the floor if one or the other seal goes out. Both seals are the same part number.

Awesome. I will be drain/filling tyranny today. Thanks yall!
