I am thinking of having power steering installed on my 40. Glenn is offering to do it for free so that part is done. I can buy the complete saginaw kit from Man-A-Fre but it cost around $1400. Can any of all come up with a cheaper way of doing this? I have done tons of research and to be honest I am now more confused now than when I started. Not being mechanically inclined I would appreciate your help.

Sometime you can use the steering gear of another vehicle. I have seen people using power steering from another veh but this usually on American vehicles. But have you asked Glenn?

I also checked into the gym at the mall it is nice. But 10 dollars a month gym membership is the best way to avoid the need for power steering

Bro I am one of the strongest people here. My cruiser is dangerous and besides I don't care how dman strong you are, try parallel parking that SOB.
I think my gear box is bad and I know my rods and links are bad too. May as well install PS instead of pitting money into the manual stuff.

Any the gym at he mall looks legit I am going to switch from my current gym to hem since I will be shaving some money.

No power steering is not fun but some of our old jeeps and broncos are not p/s and they are not that diff to drive. I learned to drive in a willys jeep no ps when I was 12 it was not that bad.

I would try changing out the steering box first and see what happends if that does nothing sell the part you prob won't loose any money. That is if you do it yourself My 2 cents

You can get the parts alot cheaper from a junk yard, but there will be lots of fab work to do. I'm sure Glenn would rather do a bolt on kit (since he is doing it pro bono). Fab work is tedious and takes a long time. $1400 sounds high, but it should be a complete kit. i.e. bolts, brackets, etc.
If your'e planning to keep the truck, it would be a good investment. my .02

My advice is to not buy any used parts. I sourced everything from different vendors and made my own "kit" then installed it myself. Any "kit" will require fabwork. If it is "bolt on" then run. Let me look at the MAF kit I will help you out the best way I can. This was the most intense and toughest mod I did to my cruiser.

If you are not going to be doing anymore crawling with this rig, you can do an easier upgrade. My suggestion is to do it the toughest and best way you can ONCE and don't look back. Lots of people will tell you that you don't "need" this or that, but everyone likes overkill.

For $1400 I could help you source your own parts that are better than MAF and get you 4x4labs high steer with 1 ton steering arms and joints.

ps conversion

hi,
i've installed a "jtoutfitters way conversion" on my old 78 cruiser about 6 yrs ago and have all the parts to install it on my 76 fj in the garage. i loved the setup on my old cruiser (mount from jtoutfitters, steering box from a 79-84 toyota mini truck (from taprecycling.com), power steering pump from a stock cruiser or a early 80s toyota tercel and then all you need is the lines from napa and a smog pump mount setup from a cruiser. search the archives on here and there's a detailed setup.

i like it better than the saginaw as there's no box outside of the engine compartment. been dragging my feet on installing it, but honestly it only takes about 6 hrs.

don't know when i'll get to installing mine but you're welcome to come watch/help!

Thanks Hunter. I may get in touch with you to come look at what you have and possibly show Glenn(Lextechautomotive) on here what you have and decide which one would be best for me. If you do not mind me asking about how much do you have invested in the parts?

it's not really pro bono. i am giving him a couple of cheeseburger baskets and a ham and some ribs for it. He just doesn't know it yet.
Besides I am helping him out since he has never installed PS before. i am contributing to his education and you can't put a price on education.

I put a JT outfitters "kit" on Scotts 40. Don't do it. It works, but not after quite abit of fab work and cussing. I would never buy anything else from them. Stic w/ MAF, CCOT or Spector.

happy to show you my setup. i ran the identical deal on my 78 for three years with no problems and it was easy to install. plenty of power for 33s.

mount was around 100 bucks
box from tap recycling around 175
pump from someone of mud 30 bucks
smog pump bracketry from someone on mud 20 bucks.
lines were about 20 bucks

so around 350 bucks.

and 4-6 hrs of time.

I'm not a fan of the MAF or SOR kit as it uses a spud shaft and wears on the box.
Someone once told me that the spud shaft can be taken out from the MAF system. I don't know.

Sure you can, but why over pay for a "kit" and then throw out parts that you paid good money for.

If you go the route of installing a "Toyota" PS setup, atleast install the saginaw pump to get proper fluid to the box. But don't plan on turning anything over 33's in the rocks.

What's the big deal about having the box out of the engine bay. If anything it makes for a more mechanic friendly engine bay. Mount the sag box properly and there is virtually zero chance of getting it hung on anything.

The mini truck setup is what I would reccomend if you are going to stick to the type of wheeling you have been doing. If you want the best, go Sag, but the mini setup is nice for it's intended purpose.

Again, when you say "kit" keep in mind there is nothing bolt-on about any PS setup. They simply have all the equipment in one box. You can save big money by ordering yourself.

If you want Sag, then call Orangefj45 on here, and talk to him and I would be glad to help you out. He sells the best brackets for the pump and box. If you want mini, sounds like Hunter is your guy.

Best of luck, don't dwell on this for the next 6 months. Git'er done!

Wow mike thanks for throwing me under the bus. I've cut out the cheeseburger baskets and ribs and am dowm 10lbs. It will take more than free food to get that PS installed. I agree that there in "NO out of the box" and install out there. The toyota mini set up would be perfect for the type of mall wheeling you do. I also like the mini box being in the eng compartment as opposed to the GM loooking box hanging out side of the frame. But not to worry as your past posts on this and many other subjects we'll never have to worry about actually getting to the point of install due to you'll never get off the fence and commit to it. Cheap ass.
By the way theres a special 5 star ***** special customer letter on the way to your house.

:lol::lol::lol::lol: LMMFAO!

I think you better stick with the mini setup Mike.

That way if you piss off Glenn you can still install it in your driveway with the help of others.

Just remember the mini stuff doesn't eliminate the bent rod coming from the center arm.

The sag box might hang on the inside of ther front frame rail, but I like not having extra linkage in my steering, KISS.

Here is the place for the parts. https://forum.ih8mud.com/merchandis...l-dorry-style-ps-conversion-bracket-kits.html

Get the brackets, and relay rod/rod end/pitman arm from him and get the part numbers for a new box and pump. Order hose parts from PSC steering, and enjoy!

I really think with skinny tires the mini-truck PS will work. Looks a lot simpler than other options. If you think something is wrong with your steering box and that is making yours hard to turn you are more than welcome to drive mine. I have no PS and 34x10.50 swampers and I have no problems parking.
