Sometimes there really is not much rust at all, if you are lucky. I had LOADS of mechanicals to address though. As always, the PO's had all the fun, although I am really enjoying her now!
 
I'd say it depends where you are in your life. If you have the tools, space, time, some funds, etc... it is the way to go. It's amazing how simple tearing an old 40 is down to the frame. It's also easier to do some work on the engine, tranny, tcase, axles, etc.. if you need to. Mine is not a full scale resto, but it is good enuff for me to drive it. It may need a paint job pretty soon, but it's pretty good mechanically, except the wiring was hacked up & i didn't do much to it, so it gives me a few fits from time to time. IIRC, mine took a couple of years, but they were fun & I learned a lot & got to try some things like body welding.
