When I turn the key there is this terrible grinding sound that lasts about 2 seconds and then the starter catches the flywheel and starts the engine. I believe the gear on the starter is worn or not fully engaging the flywheel. Should I attempt a rebuild or just plunk down for a new one? Thanks for the input here guys.

Replace it with a OEM gear reduction starter. Search for gear reduction starter for the part numbers from various places.

Also check your flywheel for damage! You may end up having to replace it. :frown:

Went to NAPA and ordered a gear reduction starter for a 1985 Fj60 to put on my 1977 Fj40. $125. Better than fixing my old non-reduction starter that was on the rig before. Works alot better too!

They should all work. Try getting one from an fj60. Starter is a tad smaller but should have the same mounting holes as yours.

Or if money's tight, try the salvage yard. I picked up an FJ60 starter for $40.
