Are Japan spec 80 Series, Federal Smog Compliant (CA REG)?

People take delivery of Grey market vehicles every day in the port of Los Angeles and drive away.
Customs has nothing to do with California smog Requirements.
If they detained his Grey market vehicle it was for some other reason.

The reason probably was that it was consigned to a California purchaser. That would bring CARB into the scene. Those driving away without an issue are probably residents of another state

I respectfully disagree.
Again customs and CARB are two different entities.
I also know a importer that I was working with that lives in LA and I’m a Ca resident he imports gray market vehicles all the time.
Importing vehicles into California is easy getting them registered here is a nightmare.

Save you the effort you will not be able to register it and you will not get a BAR, EA, CARB or any other sign off in CA on a grey import regardles of year on manufacture.
