A long term project of mine is to score a HZJ74 frame (coil front end) and convert my 9.5" cable locked front end to coil suspension. Are the arms and other parts identical from 70 series to 80 series? Has anyone seen the systems side by side or can you take dimensions of a coil front end to compare the the common 80 series in the US?

Cooler still would be coil rear end, but the install looks complex and involves math- I was told there would be no math.

Send a PM to Thommo73. He has completed his conversion using Toyota bits. There is also some info in his post history but probably more on 4WDAction.

Ishobie reckons the H55F crossmember will foul the trailing arms on a 79 series.
The coil front end models have longer gearboxes(R151 H151) and the crossmember must sit further back

Rick,

Proffitt's did me a favor, and measured my HZJ79 front axle compared to an 80 series front axle. I wanted to swap 80-series axles under the HZJ79 to gain lockers and 6-lug wheels. They said that the two axles were identical in dimension. ie: an 80 axle wold bolt in place of the 79 series axle. The extra width of the 80 axle (about 3", i think) comes from the knuckles/rotors. Not sure if that helps.

EDIT: now they say they are different. Huh,.

BUT, Michael Hein says that the 79 series coil springs are a different dimension... i think this is only important for the upper spring bucket though.

I measured both HZJ79 springs and an HDT81 front springs and the 80 series was slightly larger diameter.
Cheers,

I do have a specific question..

What is the hole to hole measurement on a coil 70 front end radius arm and is this shorter than an 80 series arm?

After seeing Thommo's coil conversion, I wonder if the 7x arms would allow the H55 transmission cross member to remain in same place or is the length still too great and require the mods to the crossmember?

I believe the front axle tube could donate the coil mounts, rear steer knuckle arms from 80 should crossover (bolt pattern same- right?).

Just thinking.

70 80 and 100 arms are all the same, range rover arms are the same lenght(ish) same with nissan and bundys.

you could use a later model 80 box(which is stronger any way) and that mould fix the problem but other than that your boned.

70's coils are narrower by around 1/4 inch hats are the same (excluding new model 70's which run a heavyier gauge metal)
