x2... ARB is far more responsive than most companies when it comes to problems with their products. Have you called them yet? What do they say about it?

New issue, now I have found a side gear with 2 cracks in it... still disassembling, I'll post pics later.

a turn for the worse

Well I am on the short strokes for getting the new parts so I thought I'd tear into it tonight. I tood the "cap" off the end of the carrier and thought there was a couple hairs on the back surface of the side gear... I wish they would wipe off but they won't:frown: The one side has some flaking as well. Didn't take long to figure out they were cracks. They are 180 deg apart. Heres the pics.

Heres a couple more. It looks like what I would consider poor machine work adding a stress riser to the base of each tooth. The other side gear is machined the same but has no cracks. It is also much thicker. I will be contacting ARB in the morning to see what they have to say.

Poser and Tim have you guys seen this before?

Just had a conversation with the tech guy at ARB... unfortunately there are no gears available on this continent and they are only sold in sets of 5. They used to be individual but found variations between different manufacturers over the years. The cost of the gears and parts to put it back together may not make it economically sensible to repair it. He said this was not a common problem and the locker is way out of warrenty but has provided good advice and excellent customer service (and a very nice offer on a new unit). Top notch service!

The only time that I have seen gear failures consistent with what you have pictured are when something has passed between the gears, interfering with them and trying to occupy the same space.

You can see an example of this, H E R E <---- this is a link

Glad they are taking care of you. I have been working with ARB since 1992. They have always taken care of me.

The first thing the tech guy (Nils) asked was if something had gone through, but there is no evidence anywhere else and absolutley nothing is missing in the way of lock tabs etc. He said it was "definately an unusual failure" after seeing the pics I sent him... The cracks are excatly 180 degrees apart and almost identical so I think it was shock load that did it and they both cracked at the same time. The pics in post 24 and the first 2 pics in post 25 are the 2 different cracks, hard to tell but one is spread more.

Definitely a strange break, yes, I have seen them like that before, not very often and usually from competition rigs. There isn't any sign of debris going through it, so I doubt it is a contamination issue, but they could be another cause or two for those cracks.

Can you snap a couple pics of the other side gear and both sides of the clutch gear (the locking ring)? You'll need to pull the ring gear and pull the other end cap off to get at those gears.

What is the serial number of that locker?

Do you know the part number of the locker?

There are some markings on the outside of the side gear pictured that seem to indicate something chewing around in there.

If you want to put that unit back together there is a cruiserhead in Half Moon Bay Calif. that has a parts arb that he may be williing to part the side gears.
PM me if interested.

Tim its a RD08, I don't have the s/n handy. The other side gear looks OK. I have not yet pulled the ring gear off.

Peesalot I was also alarmed by those markings but they look like the same shade as the rest of the outside of the gear and there is no coresponding markings on the inside of the carrier. It almost looks like it was there before machining the gear teeth. I think if it was after manufacture the dents would be shinier than the surrounding steel.

Happy new year everyone!
