A few San Diego guys are planning a run out to Anza Borrego this Monday, Jan 2nd.

Since I have never been out there in my Cruiser, I am not an expert on this area, so anyone with any ideas on which trails we should hit? So far, all are driving hundy's..

This should be fun. I'm anxious to try out the new Metal Tech sliders that were just installed.

Craig

I would love to join you guys, but I'm busy then. I camped and explored a few nights out there last week. We spent time in In Split Mountain/Fish Wash/Sandstone Canyon and Coyote Canyon. Both are easy trails (Coyote is more technical due to four rocky hill climbs), but big on scenery.

If you want some more info/GPS coords, etc, send me a PM. I've spent a decent amount of time out there since I was a kid, and I can suggest some other trails too.

Nice Larry! Where is the first and last photo of?

I'm in for sure. I have done Coyote Canyon a bunch of times (last time was in a stock 80 with street tires) but would love to hit something new.

Larry - can you post the GPS coordinates/directions?

Nice Larry! Where is the first and last photo of?

The first is Split Mountain/Fish Wash: 33.014637, -116.111326 - Google Maps

The last is Sandstone Canyon, off of Fish Wash: 32.979211, -116.214634 - Google Maps

You can drive pretty deep into Sandstone Canyon. There was a collapse that tightens the trail a ways in, but it's still worth going. If one of you tries the obstacle, I'd love to see photos.

The second one is one of the hill climbs in Coyote Canyon, trailhead here: 33.325365,-116.367702 - Google Maps

These look like awesome trails. Thanks Larry. Let's do both of these - Split Mountain and then Sand Stone Canyon. I'll plug these into my gps. Do you guys want to meet for breakfast first? Someplace convenient? Say 8-8:30am?

Here is another similar route, but it does a loop -

3/26/11 Pinyon Canyon to Mud Caves - Offroading trip | EveryTrail

"Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, starting from Blair Valley Campground, then to the Pinyon Canyon trailhead off of Hwy S2, passing through The Squeeze and Pinyon Dropoff (a.k.a. Heart Attack Hill) obstacles, then up a small section of Sandstone Canyon, back down through Fish Creek Wash, then to Diablo Dropoff and the Mud Caves, and back on Hwy S2 to head back to Blair Valley Campground."

Trip Location: Scissors Crossing, California, United States
Length: 59.6 miles
Duration: 8 hours

That trail looks sweet. Who has run it in a 100? Is there a way to get around The Squeeze? I don't think a 100 will get through: Heart Attack Hill Anza Borrego Jeep Trip - YouTube

Also, the time estimate is 8 hours. That may be too long a day for some.

I think you are right. There is no way a hundy will fit through the squeeze. I doubt an 80 would fit either.

You might try reversing the route a bit, starting south in Arroyo Seco del Diablo, to Fish Wash and Sandstone Canyon. This will give you a good tour of the south end of the park. Search for videos of Diablo Dropoff and Broken Shaft Gulch to see what you would encounter.

Hey guys,

I am still pretty sure I am going to make it. The wife and I have been fighting colds the past couple of days. So, that may be the only reason we dont make it. I would be up for meeting for breakfast and then caravan there. I wont take my hundy through the squeeze. I think I have heard of 80's making it through.... but not a 100.

An 8 hour loop will probably be a bit much for us. It will be with the family (4 month old, 3 yr old, and wife) with me and we will need to make some stops s they can stretch the legs.... feed the little ones, etc.

Both the 1st and the 2nd ones look like easy but fun runs..... But, I am sure we can get your new sliders a work out some place along the way...... LOL!

Ok, Split Mtn & Sandstone canyon sound good to me too. Anyone have any suggestions where to meet for breakfast?

I'm not sure if you all are meeting in SD or Borrego, but if the latter, Christmas Circle is about the easiest place to meet, right in the center of Borrego Springs. There is a Mexican restaurant, Jilberto's, at one corner. They serve up good breakfast.

If you are going to stay in the Fish Wash area, you will have plenty of time to check out the mud caves, fossil reef, and North and South Fish Wash. The first two are near the North and South Fish Wash junctions. After Sandstone Canyon, you can venture up Olla Wash too.

Have a great time.

happened on this thread and would love to tag along in my stock 100. my buddy and his fjcruiser also.got any more room.

Sure. I think a stock 100 will be fine by the looks of it. I'm looking for a place to meet off the 15 for breakfast. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know if I'll make breakfast off the 15 but Christmas Circle sounds like a good place to meet up after. If so what time?

If we start early enough, I might try to make it and split early for a dinner party.
