Anyone up for a F/R ARB install?

Hi All,

I've got front and rear ARB lockers for my 04 Runner and need to find someone with some experience installing this stuff. I also purchased new 4.88 gears and master rebuild kits to go along with the install. I have already installed the compressor, wiring harness and switches.

Anyone that's installed lockers before and has experience with Toyota's IFS please contact me. I'm not looking for a free installation and am not bad with a wrench, so I am willing to do all I can. :hhmm:

Rick sent me an email this AM explaining that he was a little uncomfortable working with the IFS front end. In his defense, when he offered to help out, it was strictly a rear locker job. I then bought a front locker and then decided to regear. I may have pushed him outside his comfort zone. :doh:

I'm hoping I can get someone onboard relatively quickly. I'm eager to get back out wheeling and with open diffs have not wanted to do a snow run.
 
Sure will. I've been dying waiting to get these installed. It's a big step for me, especially with the regearing. I hope to get some 33 MTs on it this spring.

I've been pushing to take the 4runner of daily driver duty and convince the wife that I need a 2010 Tundra. So far no luck. I think I've got another year to go. :bang:

Do you have a FSM for that year available?

I might be able to help you out, but it will have to wait a few weeks, till it gets warmer out. My garage is not heated (yet), and I'm a wuss. I have a week off mid-March, although it's already starting to fill up.

Is there any chance you could get a spare rear diff? Or can you just bring the diffs up here? Logically, it will take you a lonnnggg time to get home if we swapped it all here. First few cycles of break-in are only about 20-25 miles, then you stop for awhile and let it cool back down. You're about 100 miles away... do the math.
 
I don't have a FSM, but think it would be wise to get my hands on one..

No luck on the extra diff either. This upgrade is way outside my comfort level so I'm not sure of all the steps that go into the swap. It sound like the regearing complicates the job a bit.

Logistically speaking, I'm not sure how to handle. It sounds like what ever I do, the truck needs to left for at least two days.
 
Assuming that truck is not full-time AWD, I don't think the front diff is a problem.

Removing the rear diff is pretty easy. If you have a pair of jack stands and basic tools, you can do this part. It would be best if you could remove it at your place, then get it up here (drop it off, FedEx Ground, MUDShip, etc). Then I could do the re-gear & ARB install, and get it back to you. You can do the break-in at your leisure.

Yeah, re-gearing does complicate things as now it requires messing with the pinion, setting depth, etc. Might as well get solid spacers, if you can.

I won't do this without a copy of the FSM in hand, just to make sure I'm using the correct torque values, etc.
 
Ken, I mentioned to Steve to talk with you.

I know pretty much what to expect when diving into an 80 and how to deal with it when things stray from planned. However the 4Runner is a little different. So with the job getting more involved and me usually out of town during the week I didn't want to chance putting his truck down for an extended period of time.

I'm not sure I understand your whole process. Along with the rear diff, are you saying to send the front diff too?

I do have front and rear lockers. Also what are the odds, something would need to be adjusted after I received them back from you?
 
Here's my idea so far:

* You remove the rear diff from the truck, bring/ship it to my house. I/we do the regear and ARB install, you get it back home and install. No way can the truck be driven (or even moved) while the rear diff is out, so it will have to be parked in a safe location where nobody will mess with it. Drive it gently for 500 miles or so to do the break-in. Can't use 4WD while doing the break-in, since the F&R gears aren't the same. This only works if you have part-time 4WD, of course.

* Once the rear gears are broken in, you bring the truck up, or perhaps even remove the front diff and get it to my house. I'm not familiar enough with the front end in this generation, not sure if you can drive it without the front diff installed, I think you can though as long as the front wheels are disconnected from the CV shafts. I'll do the work, get it back to you.

Once installed, there's really nothing to "adjust", you just need to change out the diff fluid after ~500 miles of break-in.

Thanks for the ideas. Right now I'm still keeping my options open. I do not mind removing the diffs but would prefer working beside someone in case I ran into trouble. The other issue is this is my daily driver so it could only be down 2-3 days.

I hoping to find something just a touch more local or something on a weekend.

Totally understand. Just offering up an option.

Unfortunately weekends aren't good for me. I've been the supervisor on the construction of a duplex up in Farmington for Habitat for Humanity, and Saturdays are the only organized day that we work.
 
My options are running out. LOL I emailed Ocean State Crawlers and have not heard back as of yet. I was hoping to find someone within an hour to hour and a half of Worcester. So far no luck.

Is there anyway you could borrow a car to get this done? These are the times you need to explain to the :princess: the need for other vehicles, trucks to tow and trailers. :D

I'm always trying to justify a second vehicle. I'm hoping to pick up a new Tundra next year to become my DD. It's baby steps with the wife. LOL I work in sales and I always have to bring my A game when dealing with her. :D

I think I need to move to New Hampshire. That'll get me closer to the trails and all you gear heads. ;)
 
I hear ya. I currently live in RI and we are pretty far from the trails. I'm going to be moving closer to Worcester in the next couple of years.

I have an 08 Tundra and I love the truck. I would highly reccomend it.
 
I test drove a nice 09 limited crew cab a few weeks ago and loved it. It was black with the off-road package, had Plenty of power, and rode great. Gotta love the 393HP 5.7l. Even with this whole acceleration issue going on with Toyota, I'd still buy it in a heartbeat.

Jason is right about picking two items. If you want it done fast, and done right, it won't be cheap.
