Anyone miss their stock 200? (1 Viewer)

Adressing the OP question first: You are not alone (you will never walk alone ;). - hope some understand the comment-). I cannot say that I totally miss my stock LC200 which is very mildly modified, but I kinda do. I just got wheels, tires, and suspension. Sometimes I wish I just had the level kit for the front and the tires/wheels. Going back will be probably more cash, even tough I do have all the parts to do it. However, the Dobinsons had proven well enough, so leaving her just like that now. I have had more than want to admit SUVs', some totally stock, some with lots of mods (T4R's), and even M3 E46's too. Really, it is just either what you really need, or what you really want: Need, in the case of real off roading, a good set of tires for example, or a good set of Konis for good tires for track in a sport car; or want if you want just to have the looks and some albeit minor improvement, on the regular driving.

I say this with the upmost respect to the individuals, companies, and forums members here, that know a lot about vehicles dynamics and engineering, construction and development of products, and that have spent lots of time, and money in developing solutions: I believe our vehicles are as good as we really need them UNLESS in VERY special occasions where a bit more is REALLY needed. I think Toyota have / had really awesome engineers, product development, budget, etc... that to believe other folks would/could out smart them, it is at times, foolish. I really think a stock 200 is more than capable for the majority of our cases -there are a few cases where it might not be totally and could use some improvements- and other than tires, and perhaps the leveling kit on front which after all is stock in Australia, so we are back to just tires, these vehicles are awesome as they are !

So no OP, you are definitively not alone on this one, and I would probably meet you at the end with a back to stock old 2013 lady if/when my Dobinsons get shot and I need replacement, most than likely, I will be going back to stock with good tires and my 17's.

Cheers,

Is it just me or do others sometimes miss having a stock 200 series after they've modded it? Please tell me I'm not the only one!

This may be a bit off topic but is about a mod I like though have had mixed feelings about at times, is my Tesla style head unit. When i was faced with rebuilding my 2nd 200 after totaling the first one, I decided to move the Tesla HU over to the new truck. I dislike having to use the touch screen for HVAC and I miss a physical volume knob but it allows me to do things like run OBD Fusion with customized dash boards. A few weeks ago @isthatalexus posted that you can adjust OBD Fusion's vehicle speed with a scale factor to calibrate for tire size. You can also do that for MPG. I played with this tonight while driving to the lake. I reset it after I was on the highway to see what my highway MPG is without the stop and go part getting out of the city. By the time I got to the lake 2 hours later I was at 15.5 mpg (kept speed at about 75 mph). Not too bad with my lift, bumpers, and 34's. Oh and no ethanol gas.

Tire size certainly has an impact, but just as important if not moreso is the rolling resistance of said tire model. A/T tires already have significantly more rolling resistance, with some worse than others. I've resisted the urge to go further into R/Ts because they invite another big hit to rolling resistance.

To that point, this is a good read.

Very nice. I'm on 285/75/17 tires and adjust 'speed factor' to 1.06, which gets nearly perfect sync between GPS speed and OBD app speed. My MPG has been pretty steady at 15-16, which conservative city driving. What 'speed factor' did you use? (looks like our trucks are pretty closely matched in terms of mods)

I used 1.073 which was just the theoretical ratio of calculated wheel diameters of stock (285/60R18) to my 24s (284/75/R17). It seems to track GPS speed. I'm going to check this sometime by timing mile markers. Any amount of city driving drops my number. Its probably my 4.88s and the associated go kart start capability from stop making it hard for me to resist getting the jump on Bronco and Raptors at the lights.

My most favorite mod is the 24gal LRA... Last year I was able to drive from Waco TX back home to KC (617 miles) with no gas stops.

Broncos and Raptors have deeper gearing than your truck does with 4.88’s. You have that attrociously tall 3.33:1 first gear in the transmission to thank for that. Hell the 2016+ with the 8 speed and 3.31's has nearly the same overall first gear ratio as the 6 speed with 4.88's, because the 8 speed has a 4.79:1 first gear.

As my LC is back in the shop AGAIN with evap codes, I certainly am wondering if I screwed up when I had the LRA tank installed.
(And yes, I know we get evap codes without the aux tank, but they seem much more likely with it).
Furthermore, I hate that for the tank I had a rear bumper installed with swing-outs so I could move the spare tire to make room for the aux tank. Dealing with the swing-outs every time I want to get into the back of my LC is a pain.

But then…. I also love, absolutely love, the range I get with the extra 24 gallons in the aux tank. I found the un-modded LC’s range to be dismal - and restrictive at times.
I did carry extra Jerry-cans but those aren’t perfect either.

In short, I think I would have the LRA tank added if I could do it again, but it’s a close call.

Along the same lines as this thread, I wonder if we should have a thread of “Most regrettable mods.”

Why not go with the 12.5 gallon LRA so you can keep the spare under the truck?

24 sounds great, but even towing a 5500 lb trailer way out into the deserts of southern UT, I had no issues with the 36 gallon tank in my F150. The 24.5 gallon factory tank plus another 12.5 gives you 37 gallons. Thats still pretty respectable. Even getting 9 mpg towing that still lets me travel 4 hours on the freeway before I have to start looking for gas.

I thought that evap codes are pretty much expected with a LRA tank and that it's fine to clear them with a scanner? I don't have any first-hand experience with this, just what I've gathered from lurking/youtube. I'm curious because I've been interested in getting an aux tank, but some folks have warned me not to, mostly because of the check engine evap codes, I think.

I considered the 12.5gallon tank, but was put off from it because Slee won’t install it. There are too many rubbing/squeaking issues with it.

Yeah, you can clear them with a scanner. It’s easy and quick. But mine would come back within a few hours and it gets annoying to my OCD clearing them repeatedly.
So I end up ignoring them (which also bothers my OCD), but then it won’t let you turn on cruise control. I’m told that it also won’t let you put it into 4low but I am yet to try this with the warning on.

If replacing the charcoal canister is a fix, I may end up looking at the canister as a maintenance item. Just buy one if I see it on sale and keep it handy for next time the one installed on the rig fails.
But at $450 for the canister and $380 for the install….its not a cheap maintenance item.

Oof, blocking cruise control or 4low and popping within a few hours sounds super annoying. Yuck.

Gotta look at it as a system. We've got more initial torque with the big 5.7L V8.

Agree with you on the 12.5G LRA. I run with my buddies Raptor that has a 36G. It's all I need and we're comparable in range. Zero squeaks to speak of. Similar towing capacity but in practice, I can tow heavier with more stability and agility.

that's why I floor it and keep it in 4lo.

Yeah i like ARB because they are actually crash compliant…one of the reason i have ARB slider on my LC.
You chose the ARB "slider" because it is crash compliant? As far as side impact and passenger safety, what does that mean to you?

I spy Oil Temp. I didn't think we had that PID. Nice.

It is a nice bonus that they tested it. I have no idea what that means. Maybe less impact force to the side of the frame which contributes to the structural integrity of frame (and thus body that is attached to it) in a side impact crash???

For me, crash safety is paramount over anything else bc I use my LC as family hauler long distance to see scenic off beaten path places. If I was a weekend off-roader like in past when I was single, then I would consider a super stout slider….. but then again, I would probably pick a different vehicle altogether for that purpose.

Temp is there. I can’t recall if it’s in the standard SAE PIDs or the Toyota LC PIDs (like tranny temps) but it’s there. It’s oil pressure that doesn’t exist.
