Anyone know anything about engine block numbers?

Hey team, i recently picked up a new engine that had clearly spent a good deal of time sitting in a dark corner...but for me, it was a sweet find as it has never been milled/bored...more out of curiosity than anything else, i would like to know what year it was born...it had on it a single belt pulley, making me think it would be on the older side of the scale - but its condition was leaning me to think it was possibly from a 60 series...

the number [original] on the block is <<2F 478366>>

any light that could be shed on its age or anything else would be muchly appreciated.

that is handy - and somewhat helpful - but their numbers only go up to 1978 for some reason...so at least i can assume this one i found is later...

So end of 78 would be 2F-332845, add 140000 engines across 40, 55 & 60 series as well as coasters (+forklifts? EDIT: anyone know if they used the same number series) and it's a late 79 or earley 80? Too late for a 55 and too early for a 60.

One belt pulley suggests a basic spec but if it's not US spec smog you can run quite a bit of the one pulley.

Pity the SOR tables always end with the end of US import.

My '78 has a block manufacture number on the drivers side of the block , above and to the left of the drain plug. It's a five digit number 81215 . The first number (8) is the year 1978. the (12) is the month December . the (15) is the day of the month. Don't know what years have the number in this location but it might be worth a look.

Does it have three holes drilled and tapped on the left (intake/exhaust) side of the engine block above the engine mount?
