hey guys,
i was speaking with PowderPig on mud this week and he is as you may know one of the best cruiser mechanics around... He is based in Coorado.
I was thinking baout doing my head gasket as a PM and he does travel but I would have to cover his expenses.
He mentioned some IH8Mud members get a few guys together to setup a group repair and split his travel charges...
Anyone interested?
here is his note to me:
Hello:
I usually drive to most locations to be able to bring my tools with me(other wise they are shipped). Map Questing the distance. It looks like about 16 hr drive. This would take 2 days. I usually charge 250/day for travel, all fuel and my food reciepts, hotel for the night. I only charge the same fuel and food reciepts, hotel. Then you would need to take care of me by putting me up at your house, or hotel for the time period that I need to work. Are you a TLCA member? if so my hourly rate is different for club members. Typically with most other work people want me to do at the same time(hoses, radiator, other parts, etc). The job can cost 2000-2500 with machine work(with out travel expences). Do you have a good machine shop near you? If not this may not be a good thing to do in your area.
If I fly I would charge 250 for travel, shipping for my tools(to and from, UPS or fedex 2 day, looking at close to 150lbs 2-3 boxes), airplane ticket.
I have a great machine shop near me(25 miles). It usually take about a 7 day turn around for me to do it hear.
The most cost effective way to get me to your area is to get 2-3(3 ideal) guys together to split my travel charges and to keep me working the time the head is in the machine shop.
I would need a garage or similar area that is some what wind free to work in.
Maybe a good idea to talk to make sure this is all clear.
I am currently in Grand Junction Colorado for a camping trip, got held up a little by the snow storm and did not make it as far as we would of liked. Off to Beef basin for the next few days.
