The previous owner must've needed it to protect his hatch glass??

Looks like it did it's job too.

.

They are on my Canadian spec. '82 BJ60.

That mean the holes are pre-drilled on domestic 60's?

.

my guess is:
sliding lumber in...? keeps the carpet good.

nother pic...kind of a pain to get a dog in....dog freaks

Not necessarily. My '84 BJ60 did NOT have the bar or the threaded holes.

Grab bar for pulling drunk friends behind the cruiser on icy roads.

those were on some very very early US spec 60's as well as JDM market 60's.

Purpose of it was to keep people from falling out the back of the 60 when the upper gate was up, I suspect it was a requirment in japan, kinda like the side bars on some of the JDM 60's

other uses............tow bar for sking :D miget pull up bar :D

Toyota calls it a "Tailgate Protector" and the part number (for anybody that cares) is 65761-90A00.

I bought an '81 parts rig that had one of these bars. Parts rig is gone but I still have the bar. Be glad to pass it on to someone else for a few bucks.

One April ago when we were salvaging all series of Land Cruisers from a mad man that was crushing them. I found a old rusty tailgait in the corner that had that hand bar.I removed it and still have it. The tailgate had specific oem mountings that my '84 does not have.
This is cool that someone else knows about this thing.

I've got one in my 81. Carfax says that I am the third owner and all owners are in Oklahoma. Kind of a pain most of the time.

Yep, seen a few on early 60 series. 81's and 82's. Always been told that they were intended to protect the rear glass from cargo. Also been told that Toyota discontinued them after complaints of people cracking shins and the like as they were getting in and out.
