Anyone have prints or drawings of various bumper designs?

Thanks for the replies, bhicks thanks for the links and I like what you've done there, it looks really nice and now I'm thinking tubes could be the way to go. I may end up doing something like that first bumper which is a combination, but I suppose it depends on whether or not I'll end up getting a winch.

I do not think the Forum treated '1985 very well. This used to be a place to pitch questions and get answers from folks that have plowed the same path. '1985 asked a question, then had to spend the next two days proving he was worthy of an answer.

Somewhere along the way, only the weak minded, want to make something them selves.

Please do not further hi-jack this thread if you feel the need to respond to this post. PM me, your opinion can be quickly deleted without wasting anybody's time.

Well stated aktundra. I was amazed (but not surprised) at the reaction from the elites. Poor guy just asked a question of like minded folks, or so he thought. At least their monikers fit their attitude. I too have ventured down the path of building a lot of stuff myself. Sometimes I had to, sometimes I wanted to and sometimes the stuff available was not what I wanted. For example the wild looking bumper earlier in the post is probably great but is downright ugly on a 62 classic. I like the more boxy classic stuff. I have built four different bumpers for a 40, a 60, an old Cherokee and now thinking about another one on a 60. I searched for threads about different ideas on this forum when I used to visit years ago and as now did not find a lot. As a matter of fact this isn one of the threads that came up...so informative...so friendly.
So, I hope 1985 found some good info somewhere because here he was mistreated. I 'll probably do the do the cardboard route as I have in the past, Lord knows what happens when you ask for ideas... Anyway I thought your post was well done and I second your opinion.

I think your about 3.5 years late. Goodluck with your bumper👍

I'm actually designing a rear bumper in Solidworks right now. The bumper design is pretty well done and now I'm moving on to the swingouts and accessory/ladder stuff. Hopefully I'll be able to have a mock up in a couple of weeks and then send it out to be plasma cut if everything looks good.

As a suggestion, get it laser cut or water jet cut instead of plasma cut. You will get a cleaner edge and you won't have to grind every edge before welding.

If you do get plasma cut, you MUST grind the edge of every area you will be welding or you will get porosity in the weld and it will be weaker and look like s***.

The laser or water cut give nice square edges for better fit-up and no pre-grinding required.

When you design your plates, make them corner to corner fit, not flat, tee, or butt joints. You will get better welds and a better looking finished part. If you don't know what I mean, let me know.

Someone will tell you it's "just like a laser. It's high definition plasma.".

No, it ain't. Get laser.

I know Leonard...but it felt good.

I’m far from any sort of elite, but glad I stated in my post it was that guys’ 1st post (otherwise I’d never remembe)......and he’s been off for 6mo.

I earned my time here knowing to STFU until I knew my 80 inside & out, from experience.

Once I knew from experience a certain job/mod, I could discuss it intelligently - and I been a cert’d welder as a day job.

I’ve willingly/gladly helped a few people who asked nice & at least offered something as a gesture - that goes miles by me.

I do that same experience/mod -thing now with my Tundra, even documented most mods to date including how to make a bought-bumper fit with the tow package/trans cooler. -Or that tow mirror blinker/running lights are pre-wired in the body harness.

Give info, get info. Simple concept IMO.

I stand by the idea that if you want free info, you’ll get what you pay for.

Offer to help somebody install a bumper / labor exchange to measure the frame horns or offer some beer locally & make a friend.
A few have done just that & been met with a kind welcome.

I’d have a totally different answer if he’d done that instead of being a information ‘panhandler’.

My worthless POV. :meh:

You're right on the laser/water jet. I went back and looked at the shop that was recommended and they do in fact use laser and water jet.

Corner fit is how it's designed. I wanted it to be as solid as possible with the intent of offering them for sale if there is enough interest. I'll do a front bumper as well. Thanks for all the tips!!!

I have a .zip file with about 20 different bumpers modeled in .dxf format so you can just laser cut them out and go to town. Let me PM you them directly right after I finish this head gasket repair
Could you send me those if you still have them? My brother is getting his new plasma table dialed in and have a new winch but no bumper lol
