My 2F has gotten to the point where re-boring is no longer much of a viable option - and so one mechanic suggested i get some cylinder sleeve inserts, bringing the cylinders back to 'standard' size, using standard size pistons and rings and everything - im fairly certain that if you threw something like this in, it would surely not last long - but wanted to ask you all-knowing types...

thanks!

Cylinder sleeve

If they are put in the right way they should last a long time.Many diesel engines have sleeves when new and run thousands of miles.This would be a dry sleeve in the 2f if put by good machine shop it should be no problem and last for years

I Think you would better off finding another block to use. Sleeves work fine in Diesel's, not sure if you can do it with a 2f. Good luck!

Ian, have an older vehicle that came originally with sleeves; now with over 250.000 miles on it and going strong; don't see why sleeving would be a problem if done correctly...most aluminum block engines are sleeved.........Bristol used to sleeve their Iron block high performance engines and they won LeMans several times using these engines..just my 0.02

but the block on a 2F isnt aluminum...right? i was told that it was standard for diesels - but for petrol - sleeves are almost guaranteed to crack....your thoughts?

I don't know why that would be, diesel is a much harder application, lots and lots of info on the net about sleeving (I didn't realise it might be possible to sleeve a 2F but someone on MUD informed me it was and I did some reading) nothing suggested it wasn't possiable.

The problem is finding someone who can do the work, it's going to be much better if they have done the work on a 2F before and the chances of finding such a company are very small, you would probably have other machine work to do, line bore bearings, cam shaft bearings etc and by the time it's done it wouldn't be economic.

How worn is your engine? I am guessing finding a replacement 2F in OMAN is difficult hence the question? What about a diesel conversion (or a 1UZFE :p)
:p

Why try and be the first guy to do it? For the cost of sleeves and machine work, he could drive to one of those cruiser junkyards in Saudi, and pick up a good quality, rebuildable block that doesn't need special, untested machining.

I have put sleeves in gas or diesel many times with no problems.Lots of time only sleeved one cylinder. Its easy a 2f is nothing special.The only thing is the cost but if you can,t find a good rebuildable block go for it as this has been thousands of times.

X 2 with fj40 Toolman; + you can use much harder steel for the liners; Bristol did this both in their aircraft and car engines..........it is reliable technology; heck they won a ton of races with their "Brivadium" cyl lined iron block engines including LeMans .......do not have first hand experience with a 2F engine but if you cannot find a suitable block it is IMO a decent option....just my 0.02;

I'm sure the sleeves would work fine, but why spend the $$ when you can get a good block for almost nothing.

I would struggle to find a 2F block in the UK, I could look Germany and Ireland, but that would be expensive and difficult, don't know how hard it is to find an engine or block in OMAN but the numbers of vehicles aren't that large and they probably don't have an equalivalent of MUD for CL to search.
