I have noticed that one of my front shackles looked loose. Well today I tried to tighten it and its completely stripped. Bolts seems to be specail as the inner portion of the bolt (btwn the plates) is actually larger than the outer portions.

What I can do.

1. Order new lift shackles. (Mine are 5.5" bolt center to center.)
2. Drill out the plates and install new bolts that are normal.
3. Pray that it magically repairs itself.

I would like to be able to drive the 62 over to RHT on sat so thats my time frame.

Any ideas or help would be great. Pictures to come.....

Do it in this order. Use vise grip to hold bolt for a couple months. Then remove them and weld the nut on. Whell it for about 6 months and then realize how silly it all is and buy a new set of greasable shackles.

That method works well for me.:D

And could a loose nut cause death wobble? I am still hoping its not having shocks but I am sure little things like this dont help.

Yes it can. Had it happen to me.

Based on your pictures, it looks like the nut is stripped and the shackle bolt threads are intact. Also, it does not look like the nut had sufficient thread engagement for the torque it was carrying. If this is correct, pull the lock washers off and buy new grade 8 nuts (nylock if possible). You will probably need to go to fastener supply house to get what you need. Final point about the nylocks, check to see if you can get 'low profile/low thickness' nuts, because if the nut is too thick for the exposed bolt, the nut would bottom out before the nylon ring engages the bolt threads.

Good luck

Prayer always helps. Don't know if it actually fixes broke stuff though. Well, you did mention magic...

If the shakle is fine, just get new accesories. That's what J-Bo-Wife does...accessorize.

Now, let's go eat some BBQ.

Prayer does work. :)

The shackle itself is fine the bolt and nut are stripped. Will see what I can figure out tomm. If all else fails I could drive the wifes 4runner.

If you know the size of the bolt, you can just order a replacement from McMaster. I don't know why it has the small part on the end, that seems useless unless it is for safety wire or something. If you order from McMaster, it will be there within a day usually, their shipping is extremely fast as it is usually coming from Atlanta. I'd recommend grade 8's or stainless with Nylocks since it is suspension and you don't want it to come loose.

they actually thread into the plate and then have nuts on the end, yeah they are a pain. I think I am goign to take my bushings the plates and go up tot hardware store and see what I can figure out tomm. Other than that who knows I have posted on 2 threads in classifieds for some new shackles as well.

Anyone know what the tq rating for shackles is supoosed to be per the FSM? Or woudl it be diff b/c its aftermarket?

I'm not 100% familiar with the shackle setup, but I'm assuming that the intended reason for the block being threaded is so that you can torque the bolt to a specific value then put the nut on to act as a jam nut. If that's the case, then you shouldn't be putting a whole lot of torque on the nut since it's not really doing anything but keeping the bolt from rotating and coming loose.

If it were me, I'd bore out the shackle hole to a nominal size and just run a bolt through it and use a nut rather than the nut and the shackle.

thats what I was hoping to do. :) thanks, hopefully I can figure out a way to get that done tonight.

I was able to back the bolt out of the threaded portion of the shackle and correct the treads on there. 2 of the nuts are toast, going to see if I can find 4 new ones today.

I did check at the hardware store here yesterday and the only bolt they had that could possibly fit was a 3/4" grade 5. I didnt really want to go that route.

I saved my stock shackles, bolts, and nuts from my fj62 hamom in december and can bring them tomorrow if any of that junk will help. These were taken off using the Marshall method, so some are toast.

Are the bolts removable? Mine were so shot I had to cut them off. I will know by tonight it I got it back together or not. Have to run ot town to get some nuts.

Here are some pics

all the shackles survived the Hamom. Here are some pics:

I didnt get a chance to go to the store tonight, going to try and get up early in the am and go get some nuts.

David if you dont mind bring them, but I dont think I will need them.

Did get a chance to wash and wax the wifes truck though :) So at least the back up plan for me is nice and shiney :bounce2:

I will bring them . . . they are free.

Had a friend from church come over and helped move some stuff this am. I was able to run to Lowes and ended up with 3/4" bolts and drilled out my holes. They dont carry any metric nuts or bolts over 12mm. Got it wrapped up just a min ago, not going to try and adjust my shifting on the tranny. I tried b/f but I think I did too much. See you all at 5!!
