Anyone Got an Idiot Proof Diagram For 3 Way Switches?

Trying to figure out how the previous electrician rough wired my buddies barn..

unforntunatly i can think of 3 or 4 diffrent ways of wiring three way switches. dead ends, 3 in 3 out, 2 wire travelers, so on and so on. it really depends on what the last guy did. if it simply installing a new 3 way switch you could look at the wires them selves, two of them should be grouped in a sheathing together. those3 should be your travelers. there should also be another wire that is the common. if your lucky all of the affore mentioned wires should be black(maybe red). if you are unlucky some of them may be white. hopefully you didn't disconnect or unbundle any wires except those needed to remove the switch. if your staring at 15 diffrent wires that are free of the wirenuts/device and havent kept track of what was grouped to what you my friend have a cluster@$&@ on your hands. call an electrician.


what is the problem? what isn't working? perhaps some more info about the problem might be in order.are you pulling new wires? installing a new switch? whats really going on?

Whoever did this didn't follow the plans in any way, the Gfi circuts were all wrong, and from what I gather so far, ran out of 14-3, and sub'd 2 14-2's for some of the 3way troffers.

you might check to see if the polatrity at the lights is right..last week i installed a light for the gf and found that the previous home hobbyist wired it so the neutral was switched. this is a dangerous condition! so an otherwise simple light replacement took a few hours extra to do. i might add that . there's no code that dictates that a 3conductor romex cable has to be used in all three way switch installations. i can only guess what the GFI recp. problem was
