Anyone applied "Plasti Dip" to OEM FJ80 Alloy Wheels?

(USA) Would you switch your OEM FJ80 Engine for an OEM Diesel?

Looking at coating FJ80 Alloy Rims in plasti-dip and wondering if anyone has achieved a decent result. Questions:
1. How to pre-treat wheel surface with scratches and pits (thus reason for flat Plasti Dip)? Etching spray?
2. How did you apply this dip - wheel on or wheel off?
3. How many coats did you apply?
4. How did you protect the edges while mounting the wheel and not strip the dip?
Thx, Petrolsaurus

Look up Dip My Ride on Youtube, guy is on the east coast and does lots of little tutorials on dipping different parts. He has done wheels with a little torture test to see how they would hold up. Basic understanding is that Plasti-Dip is like spray paint and has a "primer" that should be laid down first. Then after primer is laid you do your main coat. It can be laid directly on whatever you are looking at but guess the Primer helps, however I have not found it locally (haven't looked all that hard though).

I Plastidiped my center caps a couple years ago. Only thing that came off got scraped on rocks. Plenty of guys have dipped their wheels over on T4R.org

I did my 100 wheels last summer...check my ROTM link in sig. Other than rock rash, which tears up any surface coating including PC, the stuff has held up fine. But if I had to do it all over again I'd opt for black color as their (PlastiDip from DipYourCar.com) "charcoal" has a funky green/blue-ness to it I don't like.

I probably laid down 3-4 coats; its quick and easy to apply.

1. Compressed air, then glass cleaner.
2. Wheel off, tire on.
3. A LOT of light coats-this is key. Lay it on thick, but with many light coats. Makes it more durable, and when you want to peel it off, it makes it tons easier. The first two or three coats wont even really show up. Don't worry, let each one dry to the touch and spray it again.
4. I peeled mine off when I got new tires, so I'm not positive, but I think you would have to respray.

I plasti dip my alloys back in 2011.
They still holding great...

I had a set of FZJ80 rims.
These had some corrosion on them, so scoring the surface with a brush wheel was not a difficult decision to make... cleaned them with Acetone.
Two coats, that's all it took...

Are you planning on removing the paint in the future? Why not just use regular paint? Anyways to answer your original question, just make sure the surface is clean, no need to etch or primer.
