Some friends and I are planning a self drive trip around Ethiopia and Djibouti. We’ve found a car hire place that has land cruisers. I’ve lived and worked in Africa though not Ethiopia. Thinking of driving from Addis to Dire Dawa, Djibouti then west to see the churches, highlands etc. Would like to get some info on road conditions, safety etc.

Thanks
Charles

I have been to Ethiopia 5 times in the last 5 years. I am going back again the 2nd week of November.
I always fly into Addis and drive down to Awassa. I have never been that far east.
I have never felt unsafe in Ethiopia. For the most part, the people are very great to talk to. Very friendly and helpful. Happy to speak to Americans.
(Honduras was way sketchier when I went there in the mid 90's.)

The roads are quite good, as the Chinese have been building highways all over Ethiopia, in exchange for selling their cheap electronics in country.
Awassa, Ethiopia is one of my favorite places to be. I have kids that I sponsor there and I feel blessed to be able to go and spend time with them.
