anybody heard of a "Hercules" winch from Lodi, CA? made from P38 starter?

Winch for sale locally, very cheap.
Only info I have is that it's labeled "Hercules" Manuf, Lodi, CA, or something like that. Supposedly made from a P38 starter motor.
Anybody knows about this thing or similar?

sounds like this may have been a small outfit that built some winches from surplus motors... could very well be powerful. Thing is that for $50 it may be worth playing with if it works OK.

I don't imagine it would fit in an ARB but I could conceivably build something to bolt to the frame or receiver for static work like pulling trees and such things...

I got an idea: how about we rig an anti-theft system with a surplus M1 bolt that would snap on the thumbs of a would-be thief trying to hotwire our rigs? I'd go for that! Good use of surplus parts...

It's funny the reference to a P-38 lightning starter. It actually has nothing to do with a P-38, it's a starter for an Allison 1710 that happened to be used in P-38's , early P-51's and a couple other warbirds. Oh, they were 24v electrical systems, which if you have a Unimog or Pinz you'd be ok.

I didn't know that warplane engines like these had built-in inside starters...

I remember reading about the cartridge starters and then of course flinging the propellers in the olden days.

So these things had a battery on board that could turn these huge engines?

By the time you go through that hassle and expense you might as well mount up a 24v Warn, Superwinch, Ramsey and have an electric motor that was mfg in the last year or two instead of 50+ years ago.

If you go that route make a DVD, I'll buy it just to help offset the endevour.

I was thinking the same thing. And to think Eric is teaching the future engineers that will build this country-we are doomed.

Let's get this straight-Eric, you want to adapt a winch, built by some dudes in a barn in Lodi, sometime in the last 50 years, that uses a 60 year old 24 volt airplane starter motor, to the front of your 80, no doubt hacking into a perfectly good ARB bumper. To save $500, you'll spend $750 hacking the ARB, $500 converting to a bastardized 24 volt electrical system, and $1200 when you fry the ECU the first time you use the winch. This is not to mention the $20,000 you'll spend when you burn the entire vehicle to the ground. Be sure to do this outside or it will get even more expensive. Eric, seriously, what are you thinking? Don't be a cheap bastard. Either buy a fully tested Warn winch with modern controls and a NEW motor, or go find another hobby. As a bonus, the mounting holes will even line up with those in the ARB bull bar. Almost like it's designed that way.

But if you do attempt this, I want a copy of the DVD as well.

cute, but no, I wasn't thinking about putting this on the truck. But if it could pull a few trees for all of $50, I'd do it.

My 1977 BJ40 is 24 volts all the way with a dual battery setup, and I don't think it's a first .
