That is a really interesting looking road, I bet it has some amazing views of the Rockies. Has anyone driven it? I ajm guessing it is mostly an improved gravel road?

Yeah, it connects right up to that beach drive in Fla. 
What particular forest trunk road are you talking about?
40 runs up the foothills within a few km of the National parks and is pretty nice. I've driven most of it.

Hi Nat,
Like lowenbrau, most of us in Alberta have done many miles on the 940. It is mostly a gravel road (need improving in places) with a nice paved stretch from High River to the #1, going through Kananaskis Provincial Park and over the 9000ft Highwood pass. The road winds through the foothills and offers constant viewing of the mountains. Most of the side roads (trails) on the west side lead to very good wheeling. That is our stomping grounds.
On weekends the road is busy (maybe 1 car per 2 miles) with campers and during the week there is a fair amount of logging and oil traffic. Be careful on the many blind turns and hills.
Of course I would suggest a stop near Calgary so the local mudders can meet up with you.
You can probably average about 60kph on the road. From the southern end at highway 3 to the #1 highway near Banff will take you about 4 hours of steady driving. From the #1 to the #16 (near Jasper) will be another 8 hours or so.
During the summer a car can do the road easy. If you are in a 4x4 there are many side roads that you can go on and random camping is allowed along most of the road. There are also several provincial campgrounds along the road. The road follows a number rivers at various times and fishing is good if in season.
Any locals can correct me if I am off on the times.

My Dad and I are driving a scenic route to Idaho and then probably cross the border there. My wife, son, Mom and sister are flying into Calgary and we were thinking about driving the Forest Trunk Road and waiting for them where it comes out.
We are staying Yoho Park. If all goes well, the FJ55 will be back from being painted and having the interior done. I would love to explore and fish teh places the Piggie can get us to.

My experience on the trunk road is that most campsites are empty except the ones due south of Hinton,AB, all summer long. Really good fishing for Bull, Brook, Rainbow, and some Grayling and Whitefish. Enjoy your trip!

Plus if you go north enough to Nordegg, there is a cool museum there.

Be aware that the Trunk road is a working road. There are sections that may be quite active with equipment and pick-ups - some driving at safe speeds, some not. Lots of it is pretty empty and in some real nice country.
