I have a 72 40 with an F and just found out that the last 2 cyclinders are bad. I really do not want to spend any money on the F and would like to find a rebuilt or decent used 2f. Anyone have a good one they aren't in need of? I found an older one with good compression but no mileage known for $850 locally. The yards around here want almost 2 grand for one with about 120,000 miles on it. I found a new rebuild still in the create from SOR for $2,000 plus shipping but no warranty. I found a site called Standard Auto that has them fully rebuilt with a 5 year unlimited milage warranty for $2,900 shipped. What are your thoughts? What is the best way to source a good running 2F? I would appreciate any constructive input.

The classifieds are your friend.

Trust me

The best way is to know a neighbor who is swapping out a 2F for godknowswhat...
Next best is searching "for sale" ads on 'Mud....

I got a good used 3/79 2f (even included the tranny and t case) for $900 on eBay.....it was pulled to do a conversion. It just happened to work out that is was fairly local to me. Just keep your eyes open and you'll find a good one for way less than the numbers you've already mentioned here.

i paid $850 for my 86 2f desmogged with under a 100k if i remember correctly. 150-160psi in all cylinders. i probly could have paid less but i live in houston, and theres not a big landcruiser following here i dont think.

usually you can get a 2f in the classifieds for b/w free-$1k, if you dont mind spending 2k on a motor, buy a block have it rebuilt

Don't know where you are, but saw a complete 2f out of a 60 for sale on SF Bay craigslist today for $300. It's in Walnut Creek, CA, and was removed for a V8 conversion.

a set of rings and rod bearings are alot cheaper than an engine swap. probably do it in the truck, with a helper. won't hurt to pull the head off before s*** canning the f.

Last time I was up at Marks Off Road and thought I had counted all of his F and 2F engines, he pointed to that many more in the back room, and all of that did not include how many are in the warehouse down the road. And he is in the business of selling those puppies!!!

I am in Northern California. Redding to be exact. What do you have and what condition?

To bad you're so far away, because I've got one that was rebuilt about 10k ago (according to the PO) and ran really well before pulling it out for a diesel swap. Even has the H42 still attatched.

Thanks for the tip on the craiglist engine. I was too late though. Also called Mikes Off Road. I guess all of those engines are for cores to go elswhere. I am glad I got to talk with him. He seems to be very into making the best product he can. I am sure I will use him in the future, but I do not have enough for his rebuilt 2F right now. Thanks for the tips and I will keep searching the classifieds.
