ill be done installing the front cylinders tomorrow and will be installing new shoes for the drums, i could use some opinions and maybe a hand trying to get my pedal to come back up off the floor, i think ill tryn take afew pictures right now :/

BBl

Where are you and what are you working on, the 40?

down the street from CB toyota, ( but too broke to get the work done there)

it started when i got the 4o. the brakes went soft after 3 pumps, then the pedal didnt come back up.

took it to CB toyota, they said it was the wheel cylinders or maybe everything down to the brake booster.

came home, took it apart, checked everything; all good but the cylinders and pads need work.

now im almost done replacing the wheel cylinders. ive 1 wheel left, then the bleed and spacing of the brake shoes ( ive never spaced drums before) pretty much i just need someone other than myself to throw out some opinions and tips, maybe a smart:wrench: hand to trouble shoot if the brakes arent cured . no need to rush it. id like to have it all sorted by the next meet so i can come down, if anyone gets a bit of extra time between now and feb's meet and wants to tinker with it thats great, maybe teach me afew gremlin cures.

other than the breaks there is afew other issues on my list but the breaks are the top and i havent looked into the others.

off the top of my head
#1:breaks*
#2:blinkers front(not working) rear not hooked up
#3:dash cluster isnt hooked up, nor is the 2 aftermarket needles
#4:radio hook up to battery
#5: horn but then again i dont really care about that ( thinking about getting one from my friends VW 2000 bug, AWOOOGA! :hillbilly:

she'll need paint and a rust grind to but i want the instruments running before i worry about cosmetics

ive a low end crescent brand tool kit that does the job

oh wow i typo'd break/**BRAKE** hah:censor:

The shoes look good, the drums don't look bad ether? What was wrong with the cylinders, if they were leaking, would expect the shoes to be soaked? Are you sure the shoes were properly adjusted?

i had soft pedal after 3 pumps and the brakes wouldnt do anything.

my fj is the energizer bunny at this moment it keeps going and going and not stopping and not stopping...

Sounds like they were not adjusted correctly, early cruiser drums are a pain to adjust.

Not only that, but require re-adjusting from time to time.

im not suer if they were adjusted right , the cylinders were seized up ive helped out alot on cars but never drum breaks so im reading as many threads as i can to soak up info then eye ball it. :bang: i wont know if ive fixed the problem until i get the entire mess back together

once i get the driver side front back together and adjusted ill hope for the best and see if its better

im also startin to think its a 75 or earlier being that i have 4 drums instead of 2 disc front 2 drum back

I ran into a lot of the same issues with my 40. For what its worth, after messing around with drum brakes and continually having issues I finally went with disc brakes. In my opinion it was one of the best upgrade I could have done.

Just a thought.
