Any reason to avoid '16+ for build?

Hi all. I have been MIA for a while, but am looking to purchase either a '13-'15 or 2016+ to start a build. I am not that familiar with the 2016+ models, but I skimmed through some threads that talked about some tranny issues with the '16+ update and am a little hesitant to purchase a newer model. At the very least, I am looking at '13+. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Bumpers are a little limited at the moment. Not sure if skid fitment on budbuilt et al has been confirmed to work on the 8sp yet either. Sure didn't slow down my decision to get a '16 though... :)

The tranny issue is fixed with the recent software update from Toyota. Issue was it felt confused shifting to appropriate gear at slow speeds going down hill. That said, from a price standpoint I think you will find 2013+ less expensive and they are just as solid IMO.

Can you elaborate on this software update, like specifically what is the TSB or repair code that I can reference. Thanks so much.

T-SB-0209-17 is the update I did.

Here is a list of TSBs for 2016+ models:

Thanks so much! So, I have been researching online and so far, I can't find one single '16 or '17 that does not have the rear dvd's in the back of the seats. I do not want that option, and apparently if you remove them, they leave a huge opening in the leather with no obvious fix. Do you know if the rear dvd's are a standard feature of the 16+ models? If so, then that is probably a deal breaker for me and I will focus on the 13-16 years.

Correct, after '16 it was the '18 model they added the option for no screens.

I would want a 16+, for the trannies lower gearing and more speeds. Would be a big differentiator for towing and/or big tires.

Check with @Brushie as he removed his screens and had it covered. Here is the link to his build:

I ordered Budbuilt's skids and will post pics when installed.

Awesome! I don't think you'll have any issues but it sure will be nice to have confirmation.

I think the 8 speed is still a work in progress, in that I find the transmission much better behaved used the Power ECT mode all the time. I shouldn't have to do that to keep the transmission from hunting and from not knowing which gear to be in. It's still a bit weird in cruise control up and down gentle hills. Someday I hope to make a video to send to Toyota showing the issues with the odd gear selections. (And my '17 supposedly has the updated firmware).

New 8 speed transmission...

And, there is no rear DVD screen removal cover for the back of the front seats and likely won't be. There is just isn't enough demand to make it worthwhile for anyone. @Brushie has not been on since last June and when I contacted his fabricator/installer for the covers, there was no enthusiasm for a small production run.

That said, the +16 trucks are out of this world amazing and have lots of control and tech updates. I would hate to see the rear screens be a deal-breaker. Maybe you should get a '16, come up with a seat back screen hole cover solution, and pay for the truck by selling the covers to those of us who are stuck with holes. :bounce:

I have the 16LC and love it. Normally flip cars every couple years. This is a first car two years in that I am not even thinking about changing.

welcome to the world of high number of gear autos. Every auto ive driven with those many gears hunt terribly.
