So here's what I do to fund my cruiser habit - I teach high school orchestra.

This is from our first concert of the year, earlier tonight. I arranged Metallica's Orion for one of the groups. There are a few stray notes in the performance, but I'm really proud of my orchestra kids - they worked hard and played a great concert.

Metallica Orion - String Orchestra

Hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Very cool. Wish there were more HS Orchestra teachers like you that would do this. I know 25 years ago it was always a "chore" to go play drums/percussion for the orchestra and all the old-fart, put-you-to-sleep music they played. Love the drummer's shades. Couldn't you get the techies to do a laser light show for you too? Keep going and you'll have these kids totally hooked! I'm stuck with crunching numbers to fund my cruiser habit.

Pretty friggin impressive if ya ask me. Glad to see someone doing something new and a little different in HS orchestra.

Howdy! REALLY GOOD!! I had to go back and play the original to remember it, and I am impressed. I played in school band for 7 or 8 years, and we never got to play anything that was FUN. I hope the parents and school district realize what a good thing this is. John

Speaking as a retired H.S. trumpet player (1st chair too) from Concert Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra, and Marching band. As well as being a current old fart part time classic rock bass player...........

You're awesome dude!

My H.S. conductor was fairly hip for his time (70's). We got to do some stuff like Themes from Rocky, Shaft, Star Wars, Superman, some cool Aaron Copeland stuff. That kind of thing is what the kids need. Good job!

Anytime a percussionist gets to use the gong is always good. :D

Thanks for the positive comments, everyone!
There's a big movement right now for what music teachers call "alternative styles". I don't care for that so much, I just did it 'cause I've always liked this song. :D
Your comments are right on, though, that it helps bring the kids in. Even with a good group of enthusiastic students, our concerts are pretty sparsely attended. This time, however, there was a pretty good crowd - probably our biggest yet.

pretty impressive i have to say!

I have always been a fan of styles like the Moody Blues, Electric Light Orchestra, Atlanta Rytheme Section, etc. for using big band backup for their classic rock material. Used to be pretty popular. You could probably rewrite some current movie themes or even current hits, if you have some strong violin leads to do the vocals. Hmmm..... John

Aaawwwwwweeeessssooooommmmmeeeee!!!!!

I'm listening to it right now at work and I think it's flippin great. I too was a band geek (Alto and Bari sax) and the best we got to do was the cantina theme from Star Wars.

Keep it up.

word'll get out, you'll have even more next time. Time to line up something bigger for next time! Heck, I'd drive a ways and take the family to see that...

Sweet! Just finished the year and I have a few more videos that I can finally get around to publishing: Something by the Beatles (this was a special arrangement I had my best man write for my wedding), Viva La Vida by Coldplay, Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas. I'll post 'em up when they're online.
