Any interesting drives around South Mountain State Park?

Gang,
Going on vacation next week, wife rented a house "up on the mountains" but its just South of the state park. Any ideas of good exploration drives around the area would be welcome. Being a "morning person", will probably have hours of wait time until family wakes up, might as well go somewhere with the dogs.

Little Switzerland, Linville Gorge, Linville Cavern. Those are destinations, but the roads around them are scenic. All N/NW of you.

There's a long gravel road around Lake James. I forget the number. Somebody here knows it.

You're kind of close to Brown Mountain OHV...~ an hour.

There's a road in south Mtn state park but its a bit mislabeled and confusing. Not a network but a simple dead end. Goes almost all the way through in gamelands but crosses into state park.

Good quick out and back as you say with the only caveat being that there's a sign at base saying its legal 4wd access then I got way up in there and sign say closed to vehicles but 20' up a tree pointed wrong way ?



But look to go hit brown Mtn area. Could ride the calm OHV trails or I'd say to up roseville road to FSR 192 on right and take over to edgemont. And back down to Mortimer and Wilson creek scenic river area.

Thanks! Starting a list, hope Brown is not crowded during the week. By the way, whatever I find I will store info and bring back to the club/forum so others can enjoy too. Uwharrie is good, but better to have options.

Don't expect any real 'wheeling, @Izzyandsue . Forest roads, dirt tracks, etc. Scenic is the key word.

Any places for skeet shooting in the area? Don't own a shotgun (haven't had the need to kill anything in a long while), but skeet can be fun

Nooooooooo Harlan as in Black Mountain. More trails of every level than you will see in a 3 day weekend. Heather and I were married there at the top of trail #15 on 8/8/08 during the TTORAA Takeover

OH sheet, didn't know that. I would have shoot up to the Hollers in Harlan and probably got robbed and molested. Will look it up.
