Am thinking about buying a new Warn M8274-50 from the US in about 3 weeks.

Cheapest new Warn M8274-50 price I have found on the web is $1490, inc free shipping inside US.

Anyone seen or know of any cheaper deals going around?

Can't do it for about 3 weeks, so unfortunately I will miss out of the $200 mail in rebate.

Simon -

I've just purchased a 8274-50 and did all the same research that your doing. It appears that you've located cheapest price ($1490) that I did, but I went ahead and paid a slightly higher price in order to receive it in time (and in stock) before the rebate ended and from a well known vender (Amazon).....well this is when my nightmare began, so since your having it shipped overseas you may want to keep this in mind.....

So, I ordered if from Amazon.com. It was in stock and shipped. It showed up on my porch in 4 days. It was immediately obvious that it had a difficult journey. They hadn't over boxed the original box. The winch weighs 120 lbs and it had been dropped on every corner/side and several holes punched in the box. I opened the box and found impact/drop damage, paint damage, plastic cover damage, the free wheeling handle was bent, the solenoid/remote box was bent, the owners manual had a hole punched in it, the front mounting points all had impact/paint damage and the inside of the box looked like it had been through a blender.

I photographed the box and contents, did a return authorization and to my surprise, due to the size and weight, Amazon would not offer free return shipping. So, I had to pay $122.00 to return the 8274 (can't imagine what returning shipping from Aus. would be...). Amazon has indicated that they will refund my S/H if they determine the damage was their fault, but it will be 4-6 weeks.

Amazon did send me a new 8274 in 3 days and it showed up yesterday....in the original WARN box, with no overboxing, but it appears they took better care of it.

Buyer beware.

I think you have found one of the best deals around.

On a related note to britlkr, I bought a new Warn 9.5 Ti from a local shop back in 2002. I had a good relationship with the shop so I never thought to inspect the box or the winch before they loaded it in my truck. Once at home, I opened the box to discover the end plate on the clutch side had about a 1.5" crack where it had been dropped. Upon closer inspection of the box, I was able to see a slight tear in the factory box.

I called the shop back and told them about it and they had no problems taking it back, but I'm sure that if I had not had the relationship with them (i.e. spending as much as I had with them over the years) it would have been very easy to dismiss as my error.

Inspect those boxes carefully gents...

Thanks for the detailed info about your problems.

I was first going to buy from Amazon, glad I didn't.

Would have been a nightmare to deal with those sort of problems, after spending so much on it, and after getting it shipped all the way down here.

Will be buying through someone in the US, hopefully they can ask the seller to double box it.

Maybe it is worth spending an extra $350 and just buying it at the cheapest price I can find locally.

Thanks.

if it were up to me i would always buy it local versus shipping it overseas,

Simon-

Given what I've gone through on this and if I was in your postion (location) I would work with a local shop/club and purchase it locally and inspect it very closely. It appears that the way WARN boxes the 8274 they don't provide any protection of the solenoid/remote housing so if the box gets turned on it's face (the front of the box with the label) the entire weight of the winch lands on the solenoid box bracket and crushes/bends it. If you purchase it locally at least you can immediately deal with it.

Good luck with your build....btw, would love to have your rig in the US!

Only problem with that is list price somewhere up near $3800.

When I can get it shipped from the US to my door for $2200, that is a quite a saving.

Though the price really does vary a lot, have seen $3495/3300 etc., right down to $2599 (without shipping) on ebay, or $2500 pickup only for a one off that is too far away to pickup.

So am going to email the couple of shops that are selling them through ebay to see if they can drop it any lower for a direct sale without ebay/PayPal fees.

Streetside Auto has the 8274-50 listed for $1520, add the coupon code "save" and it drops to $1368. 10% drop.

I ordered my M8000 for my Tacoma from this site, arrived with no problems and with free shipping in the US.

Thanks Alan.

Slight change of plan though.

By the time I paid for a freight forwarding service to ship it over to Australia via FedEx, and paid 15% extra in customs duty/taxes, a $1489US winch was going to cost me $2200AU.

There were some on ebay in Australia for $2500AU and $2595AU. I decided, after reading the winch shipping horror stories above, that it would be better to pay the extra $300AU and buy it in Australia.

Spoke to my local mechanic/winch specialist. He said he couldn't do a new M8274-50 at that good a price, as it would cost him more than $2500AU at his buy price from the local distributor. But he also said that he can build one up for me from second hand parts that he has.

Plan was originally to buy a new M8274-50, and ditch the motor to add a pair of 6HP Warn motors, or a pair of 6.8HP Bow Motor 2's, using a Flamin Fabrications Twin Motor Adapter.

So, have decided to buy a M8274 housing off of my local mechanic for $250AU, and get it sand blasted and powder coated . Then buy a Flamin Fabrications Twin Motor Adapter, and a whole lot of parts from Gigglepin, and have my local mechanic build it up for me.

Parts I intend to buy to go with the refurbished second hand housing...
1 x Flamin Fabrications Twin Motor Adapter
2 x Gigglepin/Bow Motor 2
2 x Gigglepin/Albright 12V Super Duty Solenoids
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Winch Drum (76mm wider than standard)
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Heavy Duty Mainshaft Kit
1 x Gigglepin M8274 13% Faster Gears
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Large Cam Gear
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Replacement End Plate
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Free Spool Handle
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Brake Assembly
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Brake Hardware Kit
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Brake Shoe Kit
1 x Gigglepin M8274 Seal/Service Kit
1 x Warn Lower Housing Kit

Not sure if I have missed anything that should be upgraded to refurb the winch to near new condition, and to cope with the increased power and torque of the twin motors.

Hopefully this should give me a pretty strong (and near to new) winch, to cope with my Land Cruiser Troopcarrier campervan which weighs from about 2800kg (6200lb) up to about 3200kg (7050lb) fully loaded.

It will probably end up costing about $5000AU, so twice what a standard new M8274-50 would have cost me, but will be a lot cheaper than starting with a new M8274 and throwing away half the standard parts to then add the upgraded parts.

Just want to make sure it is more than powerful enough for my Troopy campervan, at up to 3200kg (7050lbs), possibly weighing more later once Volvo portal axles and many other planned mods are fitted, and I might then also get a GVM upgrade to 3900kg (8600lbs).

So it has more chance of pulling these weights without stalling.

Because I have possible slight OCD and like to customize/improve things.

Always interesting to see how others "tweak" things for their specific need.

My Aunt and Uncle from Sydney travelled around Australia in a 70 series troopy after their daughter and her boyfriend did the trip in a HJ47.

Saw lots of great pics, would love to do that trip some time.

Hey Simon,

Did you ever get the M8274-50 winch together with the twin motors? How did it work out? How were the Gigglepin parts?

Did you end up building the winch with just the lower housing and all the parts you listed above? If you did, that must be an awesome winch. I am wanting to do something similar...do you have any pics?

How did the install go together? Were there any complications?
