Toyota will kill the LC I'm thinking.

Maybe it's time for me to pursue VC again: there needs to be a company that sells a real 4WD other than Jeep; where `real' isn't questionable.

The pictured retro FJ that toyota is thinking about producing is going to be built on the taco frame. There is a "real" 4x4 that might be built in the future but it looks like it is coming from Jeep. It's the Jeep Rescue, looks like a beast and will come with the Cummins Turbo diesel engine. If it comes to market I would be real tempted to buy one.

the bronco concept also looks pretty badass

I'm not sold on the Jeep Rescue, to Hummer-ish for me. Remember that all good 4x4s were made, not bought. Anything on the Taco platform would be acceptable to me, that's a pretty good setup, even the Taco IFS is pretty impressive for strength.

Remember that the 'end' of a vehicle doesn't mean much though, just means you can't buy one new. Think of the outcry when the FJ40 ended, yet that was in 1983, 21 years ago, yet you can still find nice ones around...and there have been more 80's and 100's made than FJ40's I'd guess.

If you can't buy a good 4x4 anymore, then those of us that have them will be seen as gods, the highest level of society, even above the law! Well atleast that's what I'm hoping for.. :D

Jeep Rescue Concept Model
Here is what the Jeep Rescue Concept Model looks like:

The Jeep Rescue, which debuted at the Tokyo auto show in 2003, is a large Jeep outfitted as an emergency vehicle.

Designed for the most extreme situations and unforgiving conditions, the Jeep® Rescue concept is not only the ultimate type of search and rescue vehicle - it's the ultimate execution of a Jeep off-road vehicle.

Combine legendary Jeep off-road capability with state-of-the-art search and rescue technology, the Jeep Rescue is designed to reach areas in the harshest, most daunting mountainous and desert areas.

"Jeep Rescue is the supreme trail search and research vehicle - one that only Jeep could build," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President, Chrysler Group Design.

Classic Jeep Design Taken to An Exciting New Dimension and Extreme

Starting with a modern interpretation of the timeless, classic Jeep, the Rescue not only hints at a future design direction for a large Jeep - it builds on the rugged Jeep heritage to forge an exciting new dimension for the Jeep brand.

The Rescue can be configured to run almost totally "open" - with folding front windshield and a retractable backlite, a sliding glass sunroof in front, a fold-forward canvas roof in the rear, plus, all four doors are removable.

A Rugged Foundation

Featuring all-new body-on-frame construction with hydroformed frame rails and riding on an 80-inch wide chassis with 123-inch wheelbase and 37-inch tires, the Jeep Rescue is built for anything thrown its way. The front hydropneumatic suspension combines with the heavy-duty link-coil rear suspension to give the Rescue its solid footing on all terrain. The suspension has adjustable ride height and an additional 4-inch lift available for fording. The aforementioned 37-inch tires feature an MTR tread and run-flat capability, negating the need for a spare. On-board tire pressure control has the ability to "tune" tire pressures for maximum traction on all surfaces.

Unequalled Rescue Capability

Powered by a Cummins Diesel and featuring seating for five, the Jeep Rescue's primary mission is rescue capability, and its list of rescue and safety equipment is impressive:

AC electric power (10 kW) generation in the field
3-D topographical mapping software and topographical navigation system
Under- chassis, point-of-view cameras for avoiding danger in its path
Passive, infrared (thermal) cameras for search and rescue
Satellite telephone; VHF radio, digital video recorder with satellite transmission capability
Retractable 4-point harnesses for vehicle occupants
Exterior perimeter lighting
White LEV lighting for long distance visual search and reduced power use
Folding seats in rear compartment of vehicle
Remote control winch - front and back
"The Jeep Rescue is Jeep capability taken to maximum extreme and that, being Jeep, is unmatchable," said Creed. "It is everything the Jeep brand represents, in a vehicle equipped for unequalled search and rescue service."

Seriously, it doesn't really matter what gets put out. It will simply be modified to be made to work.

I like that FJ Cruiser from Toyota. If it had a diesel engine in it, I would really think it was great. I think this would be a really cool vehicle for my 8 year old to have when he gets 16.

Why would Toyota kill the Cruiser name? All I have seen is them seeling at very high prices...they gotta love that.

My Toyota dealer has 4 new 100 series LC's for sale the last 4 months with discounts advertised in the paper, up to $6000 off list (list is around $64K). They still have them. I think the reason they are not selling that fast is because they are very high $$$ and they are currently a 6 year old design. I can see them keeping the Luxury SUV like the LC in the Lexus family, but the LC name needs to go back to its roots. It really is to big and expensive. But it is one of the highest quality vehicles on the road and worth the money.

Wow, when my dad purschased his 03 the Lexus dealer laughed when he asked for a deal, and they Toyota dealer did make a deal, I didn't think it was a 6k deal. Guess demand is lowering, as the body ages and the economy is still not what it used to be. Also I don't recall list being 64, thats just insane!

To whoever thought the bronco looked cool it does look cool unfortunatley it is based on the same platform as the escape. I doubt you will see the jeep rescue ever come out. lets face it here guys whatever they put out will be better than 80% of the competition just because it was made by toyota. the jeep and hte bronco concepts dont have that going for them.
Dave
BTW not bashing on the escape just stating facts.

Bet the Cruiser concept goes to production. Also bet it has a hybrid engine.

A little strange lately. For the first time in years my small town Toyota dealership has a new 100 for sale. Sticker $62k with navigation. I would guess it makes sense for sales to be down. I think we're reaching a point were the price of gas and the demand for big SUV's becomes a strong inverse relationship.

With all options, including Nav, list is $59,910, Edmunds true market value is $56,077.

I would like to see the LC go back to it's roots, but Toyota has built so much equity from the name in the US, I don't see them throwing that money away and going backwards with a less expensive Land Cruiser. Part of the value of the name is exclusivity, which means keeping the price up and not selling as many Land Cruiser as they sell 4runners.
I do think the FJ concept will be produced but I don't think it will be called a Landcruiser, at least it won't be the vehicle which replaces the 100 series. I think the 100 series replacement will be a large SUV, maybe joint platform with Sequoia (ugh).

The Jeep Rescue does look kind of cool, but I have a feeling it will end up being nothing but a gussied up Durango/Grand Cherokee by the time it is built.
