Relax, just hope for the revamped bronco to come, then the 4x4 will be back

Jonathan/SandRider

I talked to a Toyota salesman(surely not the most trustworthy of persons) yesterday, and he said that there probably won't be any serious re-designs of the 'Cruiser line for 2-3 more years, since they like to go about 8 between overhauls. Rather or not that's true, they also are planning to switch to hybrid vehicles for the entire line by 2012. I'm not sure if it will be hybrid-only, or if the dino-guzzlers will still be available as an option.

As I understand it(I knew I should have paid attention in class), electric vehicles produce a constant level of torque, regardless of RPM, which may be interesting off road. Anyone else know more about this than me?

If Toyota would put a straight axle under the new 4Runner in 2006 it would supplant the LC in the mid level buyers market.. V8, FT 4WD, relatively small, and plenty of torque.

I have heard rumors of the 100 going away on other boards though. Personally I think they've out priced the vehicle in the market. IMHO: Thats ridiculous!

It'll never happen, so I'll keep my slow arse FJ40 with all of it's HP. ::)

the concept Cruiser will be in the dealerships in 2006, made in Mexico

the Land Cruiser(like the 100 and its sucescor) will continue on, it will be a low(er) production(for US) model, but its the Toyota flagship and will not be droped, I would expect 2006/7 the replacement for the 100 will be out.........it prolly already driving around/testing as a prototype right now. I would expect a new body but nothing radicaly different than the current 100, the bigest item is likely to be the motor, not sure what.

i can't see toyota dropping the LC, maybe in america, where there is generally little appreciation of a good vehicle (apart from you guys) but do you think the bushies from the outback, or south africa or the middle east will settle for a suburban SUV (school utility vehicle) like the highlander? i think not.

I don't see the point in continuing with the 100 as it's far too similar to the 120. - 120 is the highest selling 4WD in Australia and is the eighth highest selling Car.
:flipoff2:
The landcruiser after the 78/79 will highly likely have Torsion Bars. :-\
My guess would be that the next 105 will be a proper 4 Door Wagon version of the Troop Carrier and Truck with Torsion Bars. :princess:

I'd sure like to see more of the world-wide LCs marketed in the US. I think the overall SUV craze is ending in the US - hell, even station wagon sales are up now, and look how many new ones are popping up...it seems to me that 4x4 sales are more geared to people who go on once a year ski trips, or, like a lot of people in Texas, a few trips out to a muddy but flat dear lease a few times per year.

So it's sort of a luxury market at this point, I guess. When Jeep sells nothing but stripped down 4x4s, Toyota might start selling us LC78s, but until then, I don't think we're going to see real 4x4s for a while. It's a trend that may turn over in a few years, but it will take time.

Not to sound defensive... but I don't understand how you can say folks in America don't appreciate good vehicles. LCs are great vehicles but there are SEVERAL valid reasons why American consumers would make other choices for an SUV, like size, price, towing capacity, and wanting to buy domestic. LCs are not aggressively marketed here. So that makes us unable to appreciate good vehicles? That was a rather snide comment to make, it's also untrue.

this remark was based on the apparent american love affair with big, not necissarily the best, cars. for example, toyota designed the hilander for the US. the landcruiser for the rest of the world. hilander = bigger for less $$$ which is what marketing directors figured would sell best for the US.

I worked on the hybrid electric vehicle team at Uni. Ironically, most engines are most efficient at their natural frequency which often is about the torque apex. The auxillary motors would actually engage at lower contant velocity and non-positive-acceleration, and would declutch when the torque rose on the ethanol motor.

I'd say that this is partially true that torque is flattened on these vehicles, but I'm having problems seeing how it would be constant level...

[/quote]FYI- Highlander is smaller than 80 or 100 series, maybe thinking of Sequoia??

Sequoia??

thats what i was thinking of...

the highlander is the "kluger" we get here now isn't it? ifs, single range 4x4 similar to a largish rav 4, based on a camry floorpan or something...

"needs" are different to "wants"

a family of 4 does not need a suburban just to go too and from school... i will not disagree that they may want it, but in situations that alot of SUV's get put into, a sedan or wagon would suffice.

Which is why toyota probably does not push the cruiser too hard in the US market, as most the people who are in the market for an SUV don't push them hard enough to appreciate superior build quality or offroad ability, and they buy bigger, lower build quality SUV's for less $$$... whereas elsewere in the world, such as South Africa, where reliability is more important due to the harshness of the environment, and the long distances between help etc, the market appreciates what the extra $$$ goes to.

Land cruiser for example. australia is one of the largest markets for the landcruiser and patrol... not the us. hence why i stated that the cruiser may dissappear from the US market place, but not markets that have a higher understanding/ appreciation of that added quality.

ok, i was getting my info from 4x4 monthly, don't know how reliable it was.. stated we take delivery of more cruisers than anywhere else in the world, outside japan... remember we do get a few different models, not just the 100... but like i said, i don't have that on the word of god or anything. still right about the patrols though :)

Australia gets more than 2/3 of all Landcruiser's made. Really suprises me how so many people could afford ém, Let alone justify the cost in the first place.

so i wasn't imagining things when i said we import more than anywhere else.

i guess it's cause th CFA, park rangers, cops, and wildlife officers use them as well as government fleets, and alot of businesses.

no worries bad religon...i with ya on this one..i cant count the number of times i see women coming out of the grocery store down here to put there one bag of groceries in there H2..then agian its south florida so most of them dont even have real boobs anymore...but thats a diff story...i think america has this idea that bigger is better..which is true somtimes but its gone a lil to far IMHO...

the toyota concept will be going to production probably next year, tentatively named the "fj cruiser" - new update on the 100 series will be more HP to the current engine before an overall redesign 2-3 years from now, the same time the lexus lx 470 gets revamped. i would seriously doubt that the landcruiser is going anywhere what with the heritage and tradition toyota has with the nameplate. it has, however, seriously suffered in sales since the price increase, most customers in this price range are spending a few more $$$ and buying the lx 470, better warranty, better service, more features, etc.
