Any clue what these GXR’s are doing in South Carolina?

Spotted three GXR’s being hauled in 95 south in SC the other night - two of them having small yellow ports where the drivers side gas cap would be. Any clue what’s going on here? Just curious as I know these aren’t legal here, and I have no clue what the yellow caps/ports could be. Apologies for the blurry photo.

correct above- those are armored rigs. Usually built for an NGO, state dept or special forces on US tax dollars for something the normal tax payers is not allowed to have in the US. They normally tip the scales at 10-11k pounds empty for ballistic and blast rated builds

special forces rattle trap rigs were something like $176 million for 500 trucks - so $350k each but that has some backend logistics support and things that are not armor related. you can get a lighter threat build for 9mm protection for 75-100k but its gonna be "meh" grade with armor gaps and basic laminated glass and bonded kevlar door skins.

We see them in San Diego but most of the time it’s NSW types out in Coronado. They seem to use them often.
Our southern neighbors have used up armored 200s but most of the time it’s your typical unfitted suburban that I see.

That dude @77CJ5 posts some great photos from over there.

This one popped up in my FB feed a few weeks ago. FS in Colorado.

Oh sick! Had no idea. Does the yellow thing where the gas cap goes have to do with the armoring then?

hard to tell from the pics but it could be some amazingly ugly shore power bulkhead mount receptacles?

you can buy them used from time to time in the SW
I've only ever seen the diesel versions for sale and they usually stipulate that its for overseas export only.

Never seen a 5.7 gas version armored up.

Shame Toyota never brought their diesel's over to the US.

I have seen a few of them for sale. The one I see (that the Temecula Farmer bought) - 5.7L Armored - MX plates. The owner has creatively plated it in CA.

Attached is a article I wrote for Recoil magazine about this type of armored Land Cruisers. Comments welcomes.

my fave line:

the Land Cruisers were usually used for VIP movements. Seeing a civilian Afghan or Iraqi in a Land Cruiser usually meant that person was some sort of big shot.

Interesting article-brought back memories.

Spent some time in Kandahar as well as time @ KAF in 06/07.
The Toyotas we used there impressed me enough to not even consider another buying anything else.

I would guess the yellow things are just transportation protection for loading to prevent when bumping into something maybe in a container.

My guess is these are going to Ft. Bragg.

The Recoil article left out that 200s are widely used as ground mobility for USASOC troops to include The Unit and Green Berets. If you’re familiar with the Tongo Tongo ambush from 2017, the Green Berets that got rolled up by an Islamic State faction were out patrolling in 200s.
