I picked up a 1970's era Warn 8274 off Craiglist for $175, in order to put the M8000 that was in front out behind the rear bumper.

I installed a new brake and lower housing kit and new oil after cleaning out the old gunk. I also upgraded to the newer style solenoids, as the existing power pack was missing a cover and the remote.

After buffing it down, I gave it a couple coats of aluminum rim paint, followed by a couple coats of clear to make it nice and pretty. Finally, I had to modify the "Hell For Stout" front bumper to work with an upright winch, and make a winch plate to get everything mounted up. I'm happy with the end product, and hope I don't need to use it!

Here's pics of the mount:

How much did the new solenoid cost? I was told there are some 8274's to watch out for as they cannot be updated? Your winch looks awesome and is exactly what I am looking for. Any info on bringing these gems back to life would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mark:cheers:

Mark-

There is not really a "bad" 8274...

There are a lot of threads in this winching section on these units...

Read away!

Very nice work madchem - well done!

Marks69 - flintknapper has an awesome thread usually at the top of the winching section and there are several others including mine in my sig below.

The new solenoid upgrade (4 solenoids, mounting bracket, cover and remote) I think ran me ~$200 bucks? I'd have to track down the receipt to say for sure. The new solenoids also work with the remote kit that Warn sells, which is something I might get at some point. The brake kit was ~30-40 bucks, and the lower housing kit was ~$75.

As mentioned, there are some very nice write-ups here that I used as a reference for rebuilding mine, there's a good one in particular that originally showed up on Pirate. I wouldn't have spent the money on the rebuild if I hadn't gotten such a good price on it initially. If I had paid what they usually pop on on Craigslist for, $500-600 bucks, I would have more likely just used it "as is". At least now I'm a bit more confident in its condition.

Hi All:

The winch looks good David! You are ready to hit the Busy Wild now! :D

Regards,

Alan
