Hi all, I have a 1994 FZJ80 landcruiser (Australia) and I'm thinking of replacing my current shocks and springs. They've been on the vehicle since 2007 and have done approx 50,000kms (31,069 miles).
The current suspension is aftermarket from an Australian brand called 'Pedders Suspension'. It's got their standard height coils (they say about 10% stiffer) and their trakryder foam cell shocks (no lift—stock height). Car is running on BF Goodrich KM2 Mud Terrain tyres (manufactured in 2013) in 285/75R16. Unfortunately, 20 years ago when they changed the suspension, they didn't give dad back his factory shocks and springs, which would have still been in excellent condition.
The ride comfort can best be described as "bone jarring"—you feel every bump in the road. I know the aging muddies are probably contributing quite a bit to the harshness, despite the them still having tonnes of tread left, but I suspect the Pedders suspension is contributing to this too. Keen to hear your thoughts though.
The car tows a relatively small boat (not super light) and has a dual battery setup in the engine bay.
I've seen people here run the factory Tokico shocks and OME 861/862 coils, which apparently results in a compliant and comfortable ride. I don't do any hardcore offroading, but often drive on outback roads which are bendy and riddled with potholes.
The tyres will soon be replaced with Yokohama Geolandar G018 ATs or Falken WildPeaks. I have debated whether to go back to the factory sized tyres to improve ride comfort, handling and fuel economy, but they are harder to get than the larger 285/75s and the larger tyres do look better. I don't take the car offroad except for very basic trails (I have a bad back and cant get bumped around these days).
I see quite a few different part numbers for shocks. Availability for the exact ones is an issue... I can however, get my hands on the following parts #:
Failing that, I have access to Bilstein B6 shocks and Dobinsons too, but not super keen to spend a fortune if I can avoid it.
