I didn't want to high jack the xcase thread below.
I recently replaced the output shaft bearing on the rear of my xcase. Everything went pretty well and didn't really have any issues. The bearing popped right out and the new one went in. The only issue I can see is that it went in too easy. When I put the rest of the pieces back in there was a little play back and forth. I think its due to the bearing not fitting tightly into the housing. I am almost certain that this is not supposed to be like this and wanted to check in and make sure before I keep throwing money at this if I don't have to.
So is it supposed to have a little play?
Or am I missing a piece inside somewhere that may cause this?
Is there another way of fixing this? Can shims be placed or the bearing area built back up?

Does it have play even with the flange and nut installed? Some play before the nut is tight wouldn't worry me too much, but play after the nut is tight isn't good.

Can you post up a photo of what you're doing?

There is a way....thoroughly clean all surfaces and apply Loctite retainer compound

edit-----I have replaced a rear output transfercase bearing in my 1984 Toyota longbed ....it was a long time ago....approx 1989....but I remember that the bearing was a snug fit....not a press fit but snug....the kind of snug where you have to lightly tap it in with a hammer. If you can detect with your eyeball any play then you can probably fix it with that #638 retainer stuff. It can be found on-line.

There is no play after being installed from the flange, I never took the nut off though. I dropped the rear nose and took it apart from the inside. After changing it out the vibration stopped that I was having and now its back maybe worse, which makes me think that loose fitting bearing is the culprit.

Check your driveshaft phasing as it could cause a vibration....

Maybe your vibration has nothing to do with the 'transfer case' ?

IE: Loose wheel bearing, tire/wheel out of round-balance, etc.

I took both drive shafts off and the noise is coming from the transfer case somewhere. The noise/vibration stopped for a little while after I replaced the output shaft bearing/seal and is progressively getting worse. It would only vibrate around 70mph before replacing. Now it will come out at 40 and above. It gets really bad if I pull off the gas quickly, so I've been using the gas a little while I need to brake. I'll be making a 120 mile trip back to Minneapolis tomorrow and plan on pulling the xcase apart again to see if I am missing anything.

Okay I finally got a few hours to tear into this and try and figure whats going on.
First of all, doing this the second time is a breeze.
I took the rear nose cone off again and it tore it apart. I could feel a lot of play right when I got it off. I inspected to see if I was missing something or something had broken. Nope, everything looked in place.

I decided to try gearinstalls.com idea and get some bearing retainer. I couldn't find the loctite brand but I bought the permatex relaxed fit bearing retainer.
I cleaned all the surfaces I was going to put it on and went ahead with it. I first put it on the ball bearing itself on the outside and hit it in place with a 2" pvc pipe. I cleaned off all the excess the best I could and put a little gear oil on the bearing incase some did get inside. I let it set for an hour. Upon coming back the bearing itself was frozen. I tried twisting it with my hand, no luck. I pressed the gear into the bearing a little and twisted and it free'd right up. So I thought I should put some on the inside of the bearing and press the gear in just in case the play could be from the inside?? I tried to be as quick as possible but I was too slow. The bottle says one hour for setting up and 24 for total cure. But I didn't read a handling time. It couldn't of been more than one minute and the stuff set up on me. I got the gear in but not far enough to set my clip in on top of it. I tried pressing it back out and it would not budge. I used a torch and heated it up a few times and it finally let loose after hitting the end of the gear with a hammer. I decided not to use the retainer on the inside since it seems like its holding fine. I threw it all back together and I am now waiting for the fipg to cure so I can dump some gear oil in and find out if the issue is gone. I guess if this doesn't seem to work for me I will end up getting a used xcase and putting that in.
Wish me luck Again........

I am pleased to say that the relaxed fitting output shaft bearing was the issue. No vibration or noise when letting off the throttle anymore. Thanks for the help everyone!!
