well a few questions, we just had a nasty thunderstorm, now my heat pump is squealing. so it might be time to replace it, it has been a piece of s***.
who has them?
what kind?
how long have you had it?
are you happy with it?

i have 3 of them (4 counting the rental house). the 3 here at home are all tranes, 2 are original and 23 years old, one is almost 4 years old. i guess i am happy with them, they what theyre supposed to.

Squealing? Maybe you lost one of the legs on the power. Won't run like that. Or could just be the fan.

Tranes are very nice. I'm partial to Goodman for the money.

x2. My A/C guy sold me on the high quality scroll compressor they use, and the warrantee.

Time to invest and get a geothermal unit. Federal credit of 30 % ans cheaper to operate. I cannot believe how much more comfortable my house is.

I guess it really depends on where you live. In my part of Virginia - it will take close to 20 years for payback. At that point, I'm probably looking at having to replace the unit.

As far as how much more comfortable your house is, maybe that is your point of view...what did you have before in your house?

I had thermostats in every room with electric baseboard. I have good airflow in summer and A/C was not a concern. But with my GF moving in and having allergies, I had to lock up the house.
The geo is well balanced and comfortable. Bu that is more of me working with the ductwork designer on every duct and outlet.
Geo does have a long payback but it does last more than 20 years. And geo works well no matter how cold or hot it gets as opposed to air units. Typical local costs for heat cool for my size house are $3500 or more. I think I am at $1200 for the year. With $15k in cash back, I expect it will take 10 years in a house that is more comfortable than an air unit. And like with the mortgage being paid off, things get a lot cheaper after that.
For a lot of people, it is not worth the investment, it is like a lot of things. Most people who have campers probably would save money by just staying in motels.
