Is it true that 4wd will not work if the gear ratios are not the same in both front and rear axles? And if so, why??
I read this on a website and have just heard of this. Thanks.

The diff gearing must be the same in both front and rear axles. Remember that the engine is turning both axles at the same speed through the Transfer case, and the truck is only going to go at one speed - not two. You might get away with, say 4.10 and 4.11 gears front and back - if you are not on pavement.

Or you can compinsate with bigger and smaller tires.

You can actually run "slightly" different ratios, such as 4.10 & 4.11, some non-Toyota applications use OEM 4.07 & 4.11, etc. Anything more than "slightly" will cause bind & damage in high traction areas.

Did Toyota make a 4.10 AND a 4.11?

If so, did these both show up in Cruisers?

yes(I will prolly get this backward) but 40's,55's and 62's use 4.10's and 91-97 80 series used 4.11's. I have 80's gears(2 rears) in my fj60.

As Landpimp pointed out they do both show up. They are marked on the pinion 37*9 = 4.11111111111111
41*10 = 4.1000000000000

:D
