Bushing Question.

Can someone please tell me about the "Un-Obtanium" bushing? What is it for and where is it in the block? My engine parts are at the machinist right now and I want to make sure that I understand. I blew a HG about 3 weeks back, and it dumped antifreeze into the timing chain hole. Engine is out, dismantled, and at the machinist right now.

Thanks in advance !!

Yeah bro. I forgot bout that :o. But I meant good cleaning though. Giving hot bath will blow the un-obtanium bushing indeed. So what else can he do if can't give it a good bath?

Is it gonna look like this? :D

Bi-weekly update

Haven't had a lot of exciting news to pass on since it feels like I've been cleaning and degreasing for the last two weeks... Wait, I have...

As the pics will show, the 'beast' is starting to come clean again. These are just a few samples of what I've done. Compare some of these 'after' pics to the 'before' pics and I think you'll agree, the transformation is pretty cool. The oil cooler, something I thought I was going to have to throw, is now usable ! The engine valve cover came spotless but that's gone of to the powder coater. I'll post pics when that returns.

Oil pan, heat shields and the exhaust headers are also on their way to my powder coater: pics to follow soon !

Can't wait to actually start rebilding the thing...

Nice work. I'm interested in seeing some of the internals out of this engine--head and block.

Beno,

Head pics showing 'before' condition have been posted. Head is still months away from visiting machine shop and being done.

Taking is slow for lack of 'play funds' right now !

Block is still a mess. Going to need a rebore and 'real' clean and paint: thien it might look the part !

The 'unobtanium' bushing is an 'aluminum type' bushing that the oil pump drive slots into in the block.

Think I'm about 98% sure of this, probably a technical word or two I messed up ?

Got it !! Also did some more reading. The machine shop who has the block does not use a dip tank to clean the block. The were aware of the bushing and is was not damaged. WOW !!! It was close though.

Thanks again !!

That's impressive. Most machine shops will just throw it in if you don't say anything.

Where are you located and what machine shop did you use? It's good to have reference points for others thinking about having this work done as well.

X2 I agree... Share your source...

A little more progress....

I have not posted for a while since nothing really 'exciting' has been happening except more cleaning and prep work.

The plan is that PowderPig/aka Robbie will be here sometime in September. He and I will build up the new engine and install it into the truck. Of course before that can happen, I need to have all the new parts ready to go and all machine work done: I cannot afford to be waiting for a part while Robbie is 'on call' !

Once the new pistons and rings arrive from CDan, the block, crank, rods and rings will go off to one machine shop while the head and cams will go off to another.

Pictures posted below are of the head after a 2 week soak in 'deagreaser' and a power wash. I'm quite impressed with myself since it turned out cleaner that I expected. One of the exhaust valves in cylinder 1 is stuck in position so this may require a little more work/money. Cylinder 1 was where the HG originally failed so hopefully there is no other damage.

Awesome work, when Robbie gets there be sure to keep us posted with everything you are doing... I am really interested in doing something like this in the future, thanks for sharing

10-4 Progress is slow but it's happening.

Wow...this is taking a while ?

I cannot believe it's been almost two months since I last updated this post...I guess progress is really slow !

The head is back from the machine shop and looks freeking amazing ! It's all wrapped up so just before it goes onto the block, I shoot a bunch of pics.

Come to find out, it was quite a mess. This engine had sat for almost two years after the HG failure so rust/corrosion had found it's way into all of those places it shouldn't be.

I ended up doing all new exhaust valves, two new intake valves all the valve guides, all the valve springs and all the valve stem seals. Once again, the boys at American Toyota stepped up and took care of all the parts. The valves were re-seated, the head was shaved .008" and then everything cleaned and assembled.

The block is now at the machine shop receiving some TLC. Depending on when the bearings arrive, some are coming from Japan, it should be ready for me in 3 - 4 weeks. Then the heavy lifting really starts !

The three pics below are parts that I had powder coated in anticipation of the rebuild process.

The first is the valve cover. It's powder coated a silver and will have some 'cool' hardware/fasteners to finish it off.

Ther second pic is of the lower oil pan.

The third is of the engine mounts and exhaust headers. These were sandblasted and then powder coated in ceramic/high heat matt silver.

Enjoy...

Balls in your court ?

That's where those incredible folks from American Toyota in Albuquerque come in.... Why would you deal with anyone but them ????

Wow. Those parts look great. Looking forward to your completion ....

No, this thread is not dead... yet ?

My block and it's assorted bits and pieces came back from my machine guy this last Saturday. What a job he did and I'm a 1000% happy with his work.

It was a bunch of money, mostly because of all the damage that had been done by the rust.

A brief list of stuff he did :

Dipped and washed block
Refaced/skimmed top of block
New main and rod bearings
Bead blasted crank
Polished big ends of crank
Line bored crank main ends
New bushings in small rod ends
New oversize pistons and rings. Rings installed and gapped
Pistons and rods balanced together
Installed crank

So, now that the big money has been spent it's all about getting the beast assembled and that will happen with Robbie's help in a few weeks.

I have a few pics of the stuff recvd. Many more will be posted as Robbie and I rebuild it.
