Also, since I am not going to spend 500$ a piece on OEM birfs where should I get them? I see Slee sells some that are for "street" use. Those aren't OEM correct? And MAF sells Japanese and Taiwan knock off. Where can I get just an inner axle shaft? Everywhere I look sells either the "superset" with axles and birfs. I just need one birf and one axle shaft. And an ABS ring. LOL It almost seems cheaper just to buy the chromoly ones, regardless of them lasting 15k miles or not.

D

Abs ring: supposedly you can knock it off the old one but im trying with my brass drift and its been damaging the teeth.

Yea but if you look at my picture mine was damaged when I drove on it with the birf broke. So now I need a new ABS tone ring...

Well I went ahead and bit the bullet and got the Longfield chromoly inner shaft and birf. Hopefully they hold up. Especially since I plan to go to 38s here soon. If I break one of these I will find a way to make a 14bff and a Dana 60 work. Even if that means gutting the entire drive train. A Gm 6.0, 700r4, and a 205 sound like a nice combo. :D Better power, better gas mileage, stronger. Hmm...may be getting a swap sooner than later now that I think about it.

D

That is one of the most disgusting work area pics I have seen with all those butts and chew cans..

All that broke was the birfield.. If you think a Dana 60 unless you dump a fortune into is going to hold up any better.. I think you will be disappointed.

Your birf doesn't look it has been serviced in a long time. Not "checking", but fully torn down and replacement of axle seals and wipers. You better plan to do it at least every 15k miles at most with the longfields...

Better get some Marlin seals if you ever want that axle seal to not leak again.

Umm, for one Mr. Clean, it isn't my shop, it is where I work. I am not one of the mechanics so I have no part in deciding how clean the shop is. Two, that shop is actually very clean but at the end of the day they sweep up the bays and pile it at the front for when a car is pulled in and it leaks oil, power steering fluid, etc. Buying floor sweep is very expensive so they reuse it. But thats for your insight. Show me a picture of YOUR shop.

As for the service of the birf, I have only had the truck about 2k miles, and I checked the grease in the birf about 2 weeks ago and it looked fine. If you would read above I said it got dunked several times over the course of the last 2 weekends. Matter of fact I drove about 2 miles up a creek that was about 2 1/2 feet deep, several times on my last outing.

As for you thinking that a Dana 60 isn't stronger than a stock toyota birf? You are stupid. Stock toyota birf breaks around 3700 ft. lbs and 30 degrees according to Long's testing. A stock 35 spline Dana 60... 8300 ft lbs. at 80 degrees. That is more than double and that is a stock shaft asshat. A chromoly 35 spline Dana 60 shaft broke around 12000 ft. lbs whereas the Longfield broke at 8000 something ft. lbs. So don't give me some s*** about a Toy axle being stronger than a Dana 60.

As for tearing the axle down and all this. I already ordered the parts. As well as Marlin's axle seals.

:flipoff2:

D

Oh and btw, they are "snuff" cans. Not "chew". Chew comes in a bag.

Oh and for you to say a Dana 60 isn't strong enough? I think I know my s***. Here is the other toy I have. It has Rockwells, because after breaking several chromo 35 spline axles for the D60, we determined it was a lost cause.

I am sure glad I don't work with pigs like you do...

My garage is far from spotless... but I do take pride in it.

BTW you can get stuck with Dana 60s too... If you want 60s, a different engine tranny.... maybe you should buy a chevy..

For one, you make no sense. You are saying your shop isn't clean but you take pride in it? So by there being snuff cans and cigarette butts swept into a pile means we don't take pride in our shop? How does that make us pigs? And who said I couldn't get stuck with a Dana 60? You are a dumbass. I said they are stronger period. I never even mentioned being stuck.

And what does you posting a picture of a "snow cat" or whatever that is have to do with the topic at hand?

AND I DO HAVE A CHEVY? It just has a 12V Cummins in it with a Dodge Tranny. And Rockwells. I like my Toyota. If I wanted another Chevy I would have bought one. But thanks for the suggestion. Why don't you take your non-informative ass and go clutter up someone else's thread. Wait my mistake, you did suggest replacing the wipers and installing Marlin seals. Thanks.

Pretty sensitive aren't we.

You posted pictures of dirty disgusting work area... Therefore I commented. You or your coworkers would never be allowed to behave like that in any professional environment.

My garage is not spotless, but work gets done. I guess by your standards it is spotless. My work area is spotless... something about 10 million dollars in electronics makes my employer want that..

I posted the sno-cat because it is running Dana 60s. With a Cummins too...

You posted of your broken birfs that were obviously not well maintained. You want put 38s, so you want to swap out the entire drivetrain... You only had the vehicle for two weeks and you are already into for $1k for birf repairs...

So do get this back on topic..

Do you think that your birf shouldn't have broken?

Me? Who said I was a slob? Or that my work area was unprofessional? And "behaving"? Seriously? And who the fxxx said that work doesn't get done in my shop?! You brought up a point that had not validity to the topic. I have no say in how clean their work area is. You saw one small area of the shop. Not the whole thing. You have no idea what it looks like or how clean it is. Just because your work area involves 10 million dollar electronics and mine doesn't , doesn't mean anything. Apples to apples guy. Like I said, that was just their end of the day pile of trash.

Well again a snow cat running 60s means what to me? All that tells me is they are stronger than Toyota axles or else Toy axles would be under it. You just proved my point further.

And I have had to two MONTHS. Not two weeks. And how can you tell they weren't well maintained? Because there was water in the grease? No s***. I already said that they had been under water. ALOT. I never questioned WHY they broke, nor did I say that they SHOULDN'T have broke. I just said I should upgrade so that they wouldn't break everytime I wheeled it hard. And who the hell said its 1000$ worth of repairs? 391$ plus the cost of the wipers.

391$ plus the cost of the wipers.

If you've only spent $391 (plus the cost of the wipers) you're skimping somewhere.

I just bought a kit from Mr. Cdan to R&R the front end that wasn't significantly more than that price, and did not include any new birfs (though granted it did include wheel bearings).

Not criticizing, just suggesting that you may not be doing enough. Or who knows, maybe you got killer prices on all the parts. :meh:

x2 on the Marlin Crawler inner axle seals, btw. They will hold up far better than OEM.

I just chose not to replace trunion bearings, races, wheel bearings, races, etc. The wheel bearing appear to be fairly new and in good shape. Will repack them and the trunion bearings and put it back together and wheel it until it breaks again. :) Its all good. 33% of sometimes I will halfass 75% of the job. No, I will adress any issues I find while I have both sides apart. Regardless it won't cost me a 1000$ as I get shop prices from the dealer. Pretty decent discount, plus not having to pay tax on it.

With all due respect, the OP was just asking a few questions about what else might have broke...he never knocked the oem birfs and certainly didnt ask what you thought of his shop. I mean if you wanna help someone out fine, but your opinion on shop cleanliness and professionalism in the workplace belong on another thread if not another site altogether. :flipoff2:

Thank you.

And fwiw if anyone is really that interested in the "cleanliness" of my shop I will post some pictures of the whole thing. And not the small pile of floor sweep/trash in one bay...

Have a good weekend ya'll!

So anyways, back to the birfs. I recieved the Longfield today. Over the last few days of driving with only one axle shaft in I have been noticing a grrrrrr/ wheelbearing type noise. Only coming from the front diff. I decided to drain the diff. and well I got a nice stream of fresh looking gear oil containing lots of metal shavings. I assumed that all those nice little metal shavings were in the bearing and everything else. Obviously I don't have x-ray vision so I couldn't exactly tell what was going on in there. I decided to pull the 3rd member and determine what was going on. Got the passenger axle out and all looked well other than needing to be repacked. Pulled the diff. out and the gears looked great. I put the diff in the parts washer and cleaned, and cleaned, and cleaned for what seemed to be an eternity. I then blew it out with air, and then procedded to spray about 27 cans of brake cleaner on it, the housing, the inside of the housing and anything else that could possibly contain slivers of metal. Got the diff. back in, and went to install the axles and noticed the folks at Longfields sent me the wrong axle seals. They are significantly smaller. I guess from a mini-truck or something. Now I am going to be installing some good ol' cheapy seals from the local part store. My truck is currently torn down on the rack at work and my boss isn't going to be too cool about me leaving it there for an indefinite amount of time. Will hopefully have a conclusion for this tomorrow.

Boys quit pissing on everything..........next you will be arguing over cup holders and floor mats.

Nice Birf break on that 80 axle, service would not of mattered..........broke two within 1000 miles of a rebuild.
It was in a place most dont take their 80's.......

If its a issue put the spindle back on and the front wheel and move it without the diff...........could save you some heartache......still lots of work
