So the PO of my wagon put in a dinky little duralast battery and my 4runner needs a new battery. So I want to put the duralast in and get a new beefy battery in the 80.

I'm looking at either the yellow top optima, or the pc1700 odyssey. I'm leaning more towards the odyssey. I did some searching and read some of you guys might? be using the pc1700. Also I wasn't clear if it takes some modifying to get the pc1700 to fit.

I could not get the PC1700 to fit, but and Optima group 31 will fit. Others have had better luck with the pc1700.

Concorde Lifeline 2700T fits the tray perfectly and has more Amp Hours but less CCA's (still strongly starts a 1FZ) only problem you may have is I dont think it will work with the stock cables, the posts are in the front of the battery

As another option, the orbital, not the optima, seems super cool. Basically both the optima and the orbital are made by exide (from what i can conclude) but the orbital has a few features from conventional battery technology that make it much tougher than the optima. The first thing is that the orbital is vented which takes away most of the risk of overcharging the battery. The second thing is that the orbital has a regular rectangular top which takes away most of the risk of using the toyota factory holddown on the optima (i seem to remember someone who was running red top optima and the holddown slipped off and contacted the terminals causing some serious damage? cant remember who???). The third thing is that the orbital's terminals are in the center so it does not matter which type of terminals the stock batt came with. The last thing is that like the optima, the orbital is a spiral cell gel battery that cannot leak like regular batts, you can mount it sideways, upside down, rightside up, whatever. It charges up super quickly and seems to hold the charge super long. The orbital comes with 2 year free replacement warranty and an 84 month pro-rated warranty. 1000 CA's and 750 CCA's at 0 degrees.

Anyway, just another thing to think about. HTH.

Optima is owned by Johnson Control and it is vented, sort of. It has two vents on the side that allows the battery to be vented in case it overheats.

The Optima Group 31 battery is too tall to fit in a 80 battery tray. Hood just touches the terminals.

i thought all optimas have a side post option, would that work? i know my optima has that.

Hmmm...The one I have in mine seems to work fine, and I know of 2 other 80's with the same battery. I posted some pics in my dual battery install post.

Well, maybe my research led me astray, and not to argue at all, but from what i was told, the vents in the optima that help with heating, do not do much for mitigating the pressure or whatever occurs from overcharging. In other words i was told from several sources that the optimas are overly sensitive to overcharging wheras the orbital is not so much so and that this was due to the 'extra venting' of the orbital. Perhaps it is really due to something totally different from the vents??? Or, perhaps it is really due to the bullpucky (how's that, i'm tryin! ) that the parts person was telling me at NAPA. Who knows, not the first time i've been bp'ed! :D Anyways, so far I'm happy with the orbital and i think that almost all the people who have converted from optimas to orbitals are happy as well??? Any returned orbitals out there???

Signed, about optimas!

My bad! I'm still thinking the yellowtop group 31 with threaded terminals. How close is the front terminal from the hood? I'm thinking about a group 31 as an aux battery (on the pass side). It's also interesting to note that the Group 31 optima yellow tops have terminals in the same position, not offset like the bluetop.
