I spent a couple of days looking at the various consoles on the market, but didn't really like any of them for this particular project. I want to keep this vehicle fun and creative and the ammo can console just really fit my theme for it.

I started with a 20mm ammo can.

I thought through several fabricated hinge designs, but wasn't really happy with any of them so I decided to build my own. The one in the photos is the original version of the hinge. I have made a couple of changes and the new one is printing now. It should be ready this evening. The new hinge also has an integrated stop so the lid won't open into the lap of the people in the back seat.

One of the things that drew me to the ammo can is the ability to mount things to the inside and outside easily. Last night, I added a Glock 19 mount and a wireless charging cradle for my phone.

Soon, I will be wiring the inside with multiple charging ports and a small AC/DC inverter.

Why do you need a gun beside your seat ? Is there a lot of carjacking in your area ? I do have a rest for my rifle in my truck but I use it for hunting . Looks like it might cause a little grief getting the seat belt plugged in ? I like the ammo can hinge though . are you building this car for the apocalypse ?

I like it but I see a few places my elbow would get whacked, my funny bone hurts just looking at it ;)

as for a gun, I have a gun next to me at all times, I even have a J frame mounted to the steering column of my 100 series, s*** happens.....

Awesome build. I need a solution to a better center console and was thinking about this.

Probably depends on his location. Would make it easier if he lives in an open carry state to pull it off the hip and put in the holder right there. Still very accessible. I am going to be making some modifications to my Smittybuilt in the near future to add a small kydex holster inside the console. I am not allowed to carry in my office, so I will just pull out of the EDC holster and place in the console, still wearing holster.

I am not interested in getting into a conversation about guns and car jacking here. The point was to show that the ammo can is useful for mounting various things: cup holders, phone chargers, and even one of those dancing flower things if that's more appropriate.

Nice work on the console!!

What you keep in there is your business.

I'd like to see finished pics with the power and all when you are ready.

Actaully in 1993 someone tried to carjack me......a G23 trumps a knive.

I also use to haul 100's(400 was the most) of weapons(often full autos) in my cruiser for work....so being prepared made since.

I'm very sorry to have brought it up . If you had put a picture of the flower mounted to your armrest I probably wouldn't have mentioned the carjacking thing . I thought it was relative question based on the photo you did post . I wasn't passing judgement of your personal insecurities in any way . Please don't take it the wrong way .

No harm done. All in fun.

Love that you printed your own hinge. I've had an ammo can console like that for a few years now and while annoying at times, I love the ability to completely remove the console top.

Will that cell mount get in the way of e-brake use? I got a windshield phone mount that is wireless charging enabled. Works great up on top of the dash for navigation, never have to look straight down towards my lap to see where my next turn is

I thought it might, but I have driven it every day since installing and no issues whatsoever. I do have to reach over, in front of, the phone mount, but it's not an inconvenience and definitely worth the trouble to have the phone out of they way. It's great to be able to just drop it in the slot and it charge; no cables to hook up.

Looks like a really nicely styled hinge, did you print it solid or is there an infill pattern you went with? Looks awesome.

Thanks. The one in the photos is printed solid. The cost of the material is negligible. However, for the new design, there are some extrusions built into. The extra material didn't add to the strength; no reason to be wasteful.

I have a few questions and hoping this old thread will still have some action. What are you using for the hinge pivot, and is there a way to access these files?

Please don't bring your politics here. Even if I agree with you 100%, this is not the place for it.
